Can anyone please tell me how to remove the throttle position sensor off my 52 plate van 1.9 diesel. Cheers. Looks like a star key but not sure. Many thanks.

Yes they are mate but I've gone through 6 sets and it's smaller than the size 10. Either a specialised size or the whole throttle unit comes as one. Only two Alan keys holding that. Thanks for your help phone scrappies tomoz for a whole unit.

No I friggin hadn't. But I fecking will now. When I get a replacement. Hoping that's what is wrong. Bought a lead for laptop. No errors or codes in van but said about the throttle sensor. That's why I'm trying scrappies first. Thanks for your help mate.

Latest update.

Took van to garage to confirm my readings just in case £20.
The first thing he got was a fault saying that the voltage was wrong in the ECU ?? Don't know what happened to that cause he then went to a different screen. All these codes then came up.
P0252 injection pump fuel metering
P0510 closed throttle position switch
P0110 intake air temp sensor 1 circuit
P0638 throttle actuator control range
P0380 glow plug/ heater circuit
P0380 again

Now that's a fair few codes only one I had got was throttle position switch.
Now I'm thinking if there is a voltage problem in the ECU could that then be making all the other sensors wonky ????
What and where do I test voltage on the ECU. Got testers etc I'm a sparky by trade 230v.
Many thanks for all your help so far

Did he manage to get a figure for the voltage? It could be something as simple as a duff battery ? Or a problem with the voltage regulation internally to the ecu
It's quite possible if the voltage going out to the sensors is wrong, given most of them work off resistance changes that this could be the cause of the problem however I'm skeptical as I would have expected more sensor errors if this were the case,

What the guy needed to do is clear all the codes the recheck a few mins later to see what had come back this probably isn't very helpful but does give you something to work on

Many thanks for your reply. He has now cleared the codes and I will be returning there tomorrow morning for another check. See what comes up then ? I will update after this. Cheers.

Update on idling

Have been to garage and he's cleared the codes. Been driving about a week now with no change to van. Been back to garage and no codes stored. WTF. Now have a very serious knocking sound in the engine and she still won't tick over and won't do low speeds in high hear. Have to stay in third in all 30 zones along with the noise coming from the engine now getting some serious looks. NOW WHAT DO I DO ????????? I can email anyone a sound file of the engine noise of required. Pm me your details. Many thanks in advance.

Have you done a compression test to rule any big issues like head gasket or knackered rings? Have you considered anything like piston slap? Didn't someone suggest a new high pressure diesel pump? Did you change it? Making a lot of noise is usually a good indication of a dying engine compression test should also highlight any issues with the timing belt having slipped (I think I suggested changing this too?)

Can you keep this to just one thread there are 3 now that you've posted the same problem too and it's only going to get confusing if people start posting different things to different threads

Sorry about the multiple threads. I was having problems with iPhone app which I have now resolved. I think I'll give in gracefully and get another engine. Found one with an online parts website for £240 delivered. Thanks for all your help.

great idea except....

does it come with all ancillaries because often diesel engines won't have the diesel pump alternator, starter etc so...

if the problem is in the fuel pump you've paid £240 plus all the work of changing the engine over and you are still no better off than when you started

Yes mate it's a bare block. I think I'll get a timing belt tomorrow and change that over the weekend and see what I got then. You've made quite a valid point. Which Haynes manual do I need to get for the 1.9d ? As you know can't get one for the punto. And I forget whic other model had that engine so I can go to Halfords and get the bloody thing. Cheers mate.
