Hi, Ive got a 6 speed mk2 sporting, and had the gearbox changed a couple of weeks back as the dif had locked on the old one and just ripped the box apart like it had paper casings.

Its got another s/h box fitted, although much lower miles, but the car now clonks from somewhere at the front, mainly left side when I pull away from a stop, ie at junctions, in traffic etc.

Its only noticeable really in 1st gear, and only when i pull away, as if something is worn, and its taking up some slack. Its clearly audible from inside and out, as a mate at work walked by and commented on it.

If I drive very slowly away, it just clicks, if i was to pull away fast into a the flow of traffic it judders like mad.

Doesnt make the noise when traveling along, or through the gears, in corners, or pot holes, speed humps, etc, just pulling off from stop.

Any ideas folks?

Thanks, Lee

first thing i would do is check the driveshaft nut and also make sure you staked it over properly

just had another thought
are you sure the driveshafts are compatable because i tried to put a mk2 driveshaft into a mk2b inner driveshaft and found the inner cups that sit on the shaft were different as the splines were different

Could the ones high-lighted in red be the problems you are haveing due to been diffrent cars and also you not shure on the year of the stilo????

decided to play it safe, I popped the car to a garage i use for mot`s etc and they had aquick look, he seemed to think its the rear gearbox mount. He was pushing on the engine with me in first letting the clutch bite.

Funny thing is, for a few miles after that it was barely noticeable, then gradually came back again, so to save faffing around, i`ll get that checked first.

The car has a horrendous engine oil leak anyway, which i should have had done back when it was MOTd in november, as it was mentioned then.

Will report back when the car goes in early next week, as it was superbly smooth when it was first fitted for a week or so. Ive got a feeling the mount that was on the box when it locked up and ripped the casings apart is still fitted, as i didnt notice one on the gearbox i bought.

And in fairness to the mech who fitted the box, he may have just removed the box and left the mount on the car as I never mentioned to fit a new one, I simply asked to have the boxes swapped.

Well took the car into the garage today, it was indeed the rear gearbox mount, but the car has a really bad engine oil leak, so its going up for sale for spares or repair, will pop an ad in classifieds if anyone is interested.

the oil leak cant be that bad can it?

engine oil, leaks at least 1 litre a month, possibly more, think its got a small crack or hole near the filter mount.

Re: Non Starter

If its a hole in the cam cover the cover can be replaced. It wont cost much and if its 8valve you can fix it with a few tools

Its not worth selling if its just that, after the work thats gone into it.

think theres a hole or small crack where the filter mounts onto.thats the area where the oil is coming out.

shame as I do love the car.

Can you take some photos of the area of the leak and put them on here?
