Off Topic Punto Goes from Group 4 insurance to Group 7

Bring on the snow chains and going where no punto has gone before
These are the epic voyages of the Fiat Punto
Seeking out terrain that surly shouldnt be passable!

was funny tho watching RWD and some pickup 4wd's been stuck and all the small **** taken cars and just going along fine

Ziggy

In the last snow adventures there was last year, my punto had no problem what so ever.
I got stuck once i think it was, rest of the time it drove like a dream :)

whats the ABI scale?
Is it just so cars be put into better catagories more suited?
So Small cars like the punto with less Safety features is going to be higher
Then a Another small car with lots of airbag and safety features
Along with the cars valves/performance etc?

Ziggy

The ABI is the association of british insurers, who are responsible for giving every car its insurance grouping. The Scale of groups used to run from 1 (citroen 2cv) to 20 (aston martin vantage). But it was felt that this did not give enough graduation so it was changed recently to 1-50. They calculate insurance groupings on a number of factors not just safety, possible performance (not sure what they use for performance these days it was 0-60 but that was felt to penalise petrol cars unfairly against the midrange whump of diesels). Repair costs in front + rear shunt e.t.c. e.t.c.

It should be noted that although insurance grouping does affect your car insurance price it is not the be all and end all insurers also take into account how often drivers of those particular cars make claims. For example the most likely type of car in the uk to make a claim is a Honda FRV...not a GTI an ST or anything else a honda people carrier. Also where you live, claim/conviction history and if they need some money today...

It also takes into account the availability of spare parts and, as previously stated, accident statistics. For example, I have never paid less than £1400 for insurance as I tried to stick to less common 'boy racer' cars. As a young adult you are limited to the amount of power before insurance gets even more rediculous so you're usually lucky to get insured on anything above 1.4/1.6.

I jumped from a 1.3 Hyundai accent to a 2.0 20V Bravo HGT and my insurance went down (0 ncb - 2 years driving), I ended up paying £1000 for it :)

My tip would be find a car that YOU like, not that is seen as 'socially popular' and one that is under the radar as far as young people are concerned with, this way the stats for accidents should be less.

The general rule of thumb to calculate the change in insurance group is double what the old one was and you won't be far off. Example: group 4 punto changes to group 7 :)

Even though the insurance group from 4 - 7 looks bad surly it should not make any difference to insurance cost and its just been more accurate.

But of course insurance companise are going to take any advantage to make more money so it is inevatable that it will go up annoyinngly.

Hahahha look at the madness!!!

1.2 Active Sport 3d - 9
1.9 JTD Active Sport 3d - 7

1.2 Dynamic 3d - 7
1.2 Dynamic 5d - 12

No they are taking advantage using the snow over the last 2-3 years as an excuse

I don't see why they can't just 'load' the premiums of those that claimed I don't want to pay for idiots claims because they can't drive with a bit of snow on the road :bang:

I tried that at my last renweal date but they would not budge and a ended up laghing down the phone at the beacuse a new i could get it more than half the price else where.

Same lol. Admiral. Their renewal is always at least £300 dearer than what I'm currently paying so I just comparethemarket as a new customer (again with Admiral), phone 'em up with that reference and they match it.

Must be making a fortune off people who just renew.

Yeah they seem to think that having 3 cold snowy winters in a row is an excuse to take the pi$$.

Tbh its more to do with the number of uninsured knobs out there.

It also takes into account the availability of spare parts and, as previously stated, accident statistics.

Thats how your premium is calulated, not the vehicle grouping.

Yea Panda is quite a low group.
A certain model of the panda is also in group 1 in the 1-50 groups.
Also in group 1 are a model of: the new shape vauxhall corsa, citroen c1 and chevrolet spark.

Panda Active / Active Eco :)

Because thats not how insurance works. We all pay into a pot, when you need to claim is comes out of this pot, the amount needed in the pot is shared reativly fairly around all those paying into said pot, based upon each individuals risks.

So if more needs to be paid in it'll be everyone that increases a slight load.
