I know it had a service when I bought it a year ago but I don't know what he did so I want to give it as good as I can.

It's going In for an MOT next week so I'll do it after that.

Millage when I bought it - 44000
Millage now - 50000

What should I do? And what is it going to cost me?

if its never had a cam-belt its due for one, however its a Nice 8v :) Safe Engine
So depends if you wanna have the Belt done soon or not
usually they say every 4 years or if you reach 64k Mark and never having it done
*If belt is been done, a New Water Pump and Belt Tensioner go on as well, there like hand in hand, its no more extra labour, as the pump has have the belt off anyway*
Abit more expensive, price up your cars needs on Shop4parts

Plugs - should still be good at 6k old, thats IF they were replaced in the last service
If the plug weren't then the HT leads weren't, They go hand in hand tho
DIY = Its easy really, plugs are about £4 ea, and HT £15 i think

Oil and Oil Filter, is easy DIY, 6k isn't long, but depends if its black or not, if its black it probably means your ready for a change
DIY= Easy peasy, Just need the tools really, about £5-8 on filter, and £20 on Oil
You could put a Flush in there with the old oil, help clean it out, there about £4 :)

Airfilter - Cheap as chips, Get it done
DIY = No more then a £5er

Anti-freeze, a good Radiator flush, (might wanna stick a hose pipe in the Heater Matrix hole as well, as that'll hold LOTS of Old Anti-freeze, flush it out till the fluid runs clear like water
and a refill with Red OAT 5 year Anti-freeze mixed 50/50 (probably best putting conc in at first, as said above, alot still sits in heater-matrix which wont come out :(
Diy = £15 - £25 i would have thought, depends how much Anti-freeze you buy and the flush, you will also need a new Clip for the bottom radiator, as you have to mash the old one off to release the pipe

As for the MOT, drive it like you stole in a few times before it goes in, and when you do go for the MOT, give it them nice and HOT :) Hot as possible, its a way to prevent you getting an emmisions fail
DIY = No different to normal, you could stick a Cleaner again in there, as it might help Clean the engine out, about £7max i believe

Thats the engine done really the Mot dont just look at the Engine tho, as your aware

Checking your lights work - DIY
Tyre Treads Decent = DIY
Brakes, takes abit more time, make sure there is decent meat on the pads, and the Disc's aren't too heavily scored / pitted / blue
Rear drums, Check for meat - and adjustment and the Lip on the drum, if the lip is deep, you might be ready for new drums, but at 04 i'd of thought they'd still have life in them :) i only replaced my drums at 9 years old

Check for Play in other parts, like bushings and Bearings

If they car is generally good health, they usually fly through the MOT

ziggy

a very comprehensive and precise post ziggy
the only stardust i can add is check all springs for bits missing
oh and do this service before the mot and it will flag any possible mot failures or advisories before man with hammer gets it

The cooling system would benefit from a chemical flush using RadFlush or similar. As Ziggy says wash it out as best you can with hose pipe, then put it back and fill with radflush and water. Bleed the system and run the engine according to the instructions.

Undo the hoses again and wash it out with hose pipe until its all clean. Its worth refilling it at least once with water to be sure its clean. Finally drop all that out and fill with proper red coolant.

Its quite a faff but your engine will get the best cooling its had since nearly new. You run the risk of exposing holes in the radiator, but even that's a good thing because they were there already but blocked with dirt. When the dirt falls out you could lose the coolant PDQ and risk engine damage.
