Hi anyone have any ideas, i have a punto mk2b 1.2 8v, recently had a recon gearbox fitted, problem was 5th gear was not in correct place, so took it back to garage and they sorted, told me they did not set up the gear linkage correctly when they did the gearbox, when collected the car the said they have fixed problem but it may do it again as the gear cable is rearly stretched, had car back for a couple of days and noticed recently when in 5th gear it keeps popping out, mainly when on a slight inclimb while accelerating, i dont have any faith in this particular garage, but when they changed the gearbox would it of been possible for them to of fit a different cable like the one that came with the recon gearbox, as i find it strange that I never had problems before they fitted gearbox with gear lever popping out of 5th into neutral?

Any help would rearly be appreciated as I am calling the garage again tomorrow, my point is they have repaired my car but not correctly and I am worried they will try and charge to sort, it went in for a recon gearbox but has come out not being drivable, I am also thinking about getting trading standards involved as it has not been rectified!
Any ideas????

Punto has only done 38K miles, I am second owner and is fully serviced and driven afew times aweek!

The car should be working properly so take it back. Its also possible the gearbox is faulty but that's not your problem. Give them the chance to sort it.

i concur
plus you have to give them 3 chances anyway
to be honest it sounds more of a gearbox problem than a linkage problem

Thanks for reply, this will be the 3rd time its going back to the same garage, so fingers crossed its sorted!!

How do you stretch the linkages?
They've must of stretched it themselves - which to me is damaging it!

If the same linkage in car before recon fitted worked fine - then its only left to the Gearbox been at fault

It could be a Syncro isn't quiet seated properly and allows play = pops out of gear
I'd say there is a dud bearing allowing a shaft to Move underload - as a result syncro pops the car out of gear

Other thing could be the Mounts are shot and its pulling on the cables, but i'd be wanting to see it pop out of all the gears before i'd change them

Would a worn bearing cause a gearbox to pop out of reverse? I also have a small amount of fresh gearbox oil on the left to right lever on the gearbox. Its definitely a very light leak. Is this normal?

OK. So the garage gets this "reconditioned" gearbox. How do you set up the gear linkages incorrectly so that only 5th gear is in the wrong position??

Wow 2011 this was - i dont even remember posting it lol

A Slight leak wont cause gears to jump out
Just ensure you have plenty of fluid in the box

Since it was 2011 - i'd leave it well alone now
