Hoping somebody can give some advice. My punto makes a whistling / wheezing sound intermittently - which lasts about 10-15 seconds - then usually a few minutes later it will start again for the same duration. It's noticable on short durations (5 mins) but not so much on longer journeys. The warning light on the fuel gauge comes on shortly after driving although its got enough petrol in the tank (this is a basic model dash with no coolent gauge), and i presume its related though not sure what problem is. I've checked oil (fairly new) and coolent and both seem to be fine. It's a 2000 basic model - got it with no receipts so no idea on history.

It sounds like some air is escaping - could this be related to head gasket going or vacuum hose - and what else should i be looking - any pointers appreciated.

Hi, I notice that the fuel light comes on fairly early on the mk2 punto's. The wheezing noise you mention sounds like its coming from the alternator. Might be worth a look.

Could be your fan going? and longer jounreys like on a motorway ur fan wont be used as much as its getting alot of nice cold air in there already and not needed as oftern

Did you ever get the bottom of the whooshing sound issue? I'm experiencing what sounds like a similar issue with my Punto and would love to know how you got on.
