Hi, back in january i picked up myself a punto HGT, brilliant car and very quick too !

Only just realised that the heater gauge only now comes up to just about 1/4, where-as before it was hitting half way.... After a little running the car on the drive and various long runs as well as getting stuck in traffic i found the fans wasnt coming on either...

After reading a bit on here about other peoples problems, i removed the plug going in to the temp sender unit and the fans came on for a second and the car cut out... (also had the engine warning light on then as well)...
So as the fans are okay i bought a new temp sender unit plug... the black 4 pin one....
Im still getting the same problem !
Heaters cold and hot still work tidy, car runs great but no fans and the temp gauge is still low.....

My worry is that as there was the "black plug" on there before, would have the last owner bought it by mistake and should have got the grey one ?
The wiring going in to the plug was 3 wires, and one green wire cut short (stubbied)....

Any ideas what to look at next on there ? most of the loom is tie wrapped up in plastic trunking....

Many thanks !
Richard

I'd be looking at thermostate been stuck open

So it takes a very very very very very long time for the engine to warm up

as the fluid is always moving cooling a cold engine

It would take a Very very long drive for it to finally reach its operating temperature

I'd get it sorted - as its cold = More wear on engine, and the car will be fuelling more to get engine to try and warm up

Thanks all, i picked up a new thermostat housing this week and will replace it this weekend... looks like a right pig to get off mind you... gone are the old days where you popped a lid and and put in the thermostat ! lol !
Any tips about those weird jubilee clips ?

May drop and flush the oil while im at it..... my brother gave me a brand new 10-40w part synth oil which he didnt want....
I know its the right oil, but part synth okay to use or should it be fully synth ?

Planning to do a cambelt and variator change in a months time, the variator is a bit noisy and its up to 40k now as it is...

Cheers all.

It's not too bad but you may need to remove the battery box for better access.

I would flush out the coolant and maybe use a flushing chemical before changing the thermostat. That will have things as clean (and therefore the most efficient cooling) as they can be. The snag is it might uncover a hole in the main radiator but better to know now than have a lump of dirt fall out and lose all your coolant on the M-way.

The clips are easy enough to remove with a sharp flat screwdriver - lever & twist between the overlapping strap. Throw away and fit a worm drive clip. Stainless is best as wont go rusty.

When you put the new housing onto the engine leave one of the small throttle body heater hoses loose. Open the vents on radiator and coolant pipes and fill the coolant. close the vents when flowing freely. I added 3 litres of red antifreeze then topped up with water so I was more likely to get at least a 50% mixture.

If you are sure of the belt mileage or its age are under 40K or 4 years no need to rush but if either age or miles is higher the belt could be on its last days.

I use part synth oil (5 or 10w40) based on my bike using the same and that makes 90bhp from 900cc at 8,500 revs. the HGT isnt as piped up as that.

Car now warms up brilliantly, the temp gauge is bang in the middle, im yet to hear the fans kick in but i know they do work....

Cheers all for your help !

BTW while i had the car and the bike out cause of lack of space, i decided to get the girls together !

What bike you got whitesei ?

Main bike is a Divvie 900 so seriously not so cool as yours. The other is a 1976 GT750 Kettle :)

The electrics on yours are probably a lot more reliable then mine ! LOL !
Since owning that my wiring and fault finding skills are getting so much better ! :bang:

Lol

You wanna see the Zook wiring - so old plastic is crumbly.

Divvie lost its gennie voltage reg but otherwise ok. Its now got a WP rear shock and blue spot brakes (as used on R6 & R1). But its tourer so will never compete with a Duke.

The Diversion 900 is heavy but very underrated esp for long runs and I use all but about 6mm of the rear tyre. The pegs go down too much if I corner any faster.

The worst part is the rubbish screen that's really noisy and buffets esp on M-ways. I've got some ideas for a fix but no time atm.

Back to the HGT make sure you check out that cam belt etc. Mine went after 2 days. I knew it was risky, ordered parts, but got new toy syndrome. Not good.
