Hi Guys, I know there a lot of posts about power steering but i reallly dont know what this could be.... got my car back from the fiat garage 2 days ago, it went in for work on starter motor and power steering and cost me £550... anyway started up fine when i got it power steering was fine, now when i drive along and turn the power steering works and then nudged a bit and then goes stiff with the light coming on... If i leave the engine to go cold for a few hours the power steering will work again but only for 10 mins or so... its not like there is a fault its more like the computer thinks there is cos i know it does work... Battery is only 3 months old so cant see it being that... What does anybody else think?

Thanks
Luke Nicholls

They haven't fixed it, take it back...

Its down to the power needed by the steering when the engine is turning slowly so the battery makes up the shortfall.

These are only rough guides -

If the steering goes off when the engine is ticking over it may be the battery. If the steering goes off even though you have kept the revs up it may be a faulty steering column.

If it happens only rarely and in cold weather after a cold start suspect the battery. If it happens at any time suspect the steering.

Get the battery load tested also called drop testing.
