Hi everyone

I am new to the forum but have been reading other posts and you guys all look quite friendly! I have an 02 plate Punto which I have had for about a year. A couple of days ago the auto gearbox warning light started flashing. I have searched the forums and can see that a fair few of you have also had this problem. A few people have told me that this is really common at the 60k mark, and I have done 60,069 miles. Car is running fine, no different to normal, but i am reluctant to drive it in case I do some serious damage. Local garage say I need to take it to an auto specialist but the closest is over 20 miles away and not open til 4th Jan! Someone cynical has suggested that this is a built in problem which kicks in at 60k to get Fiat dealerships more money. Does anyone else think that's true, as it seems a bit extreme!!

I have been trying to call RAC all morning on and off as I know they can come and read the fault codes, but they don't seem to have any staff answering the phones today :-(

Has this happened to anyone else at the same mileage?

Oh, and I have been quoted £1100 parts & labour to rebuild the gearbox, which is approximately what the car is worth!! Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance for any help.....

welcome to the forum, you say you have been reading other posts. have you read the replies and tried the fixes in them threads?
most common fault is the plug on the rear lights need cleaning because of a bad earth 2nd is damp on the connectors on the out side of the box.

has the fluid and filter been changed when it was supposed to be?

Thanks Dave, I saw people had mentioned you are the man when it comes to auto's! I have read the other threads but I am a total mechanical novice and wouldn't know where to start. (I bet people like that drive you mad!)

I am going to try the RAC again in a bit. I am hoping they will be able to tell me if it is something simple or if my gearbox is genuinely about to explode.

Worst case scenario, is £1000+ about standard costing to rebuild it?

Sorry, forgot to add that fluid was changed at service 20/01/10. Have managed to work out how to check the level and it looks fine, not "gunky", wasn't sure what else to check for! Is a clear reddish colour??
