I wonder if you can help

I have a r reg punto 1.2 60 3dr which had a noisy gearbox which gave up the other day and my brother had a 1.2 60 5dr which he was scraping which was running but was making a funny noise then it stalled when my hubby opened the bonnet he noticed that the cam belt had no cover and the fan belt which was worse for ware had snapped but had got caught in the timing belt and wrapped around the cam belt sprocket behind the pulley

Now my husband thinks that this was the reason for the engine cutting out but it was tried to be restarted numerous times and he IS worried that it may of damaged the valves they are both 8 valve and he has started to remove the engine but doesnt want to go to far if it is knackered

8V is a safe engine, so the valves will not be damaged, but it will need retimed.
