.......Key but will start with a bump or a tow!????
(on from non-starter thread)

I managed to get my pals Punto started - with a Tow!

I fitted a new battery, but it still would'nt start,

so we towed it & it fired up almost immediatley!
so went a blast on M/way and returned,
turned engine off & it would'nt start!

so we bumped it and it started right away,

so in short,
the car won't start with the key, (had two batteries connected!)
but will start with a bump or a tow
anybuddy got any Ideas?????
I'm stumped!!

Bad Igntion Switch: If your battery checks out, but the starter is still silent, it may be a faulty ignition switch. Turn the key to the on position (not all the way to start). If the red warning lights on your dash don't light up (and your battery connections are clean), the ignition switch is bad. If they do light up, turn the key to the start position. The dash warning lights should turn off at this key position (most cars). If you're not sure, turn on the headlights. When you try to start the car, the lights should either dim (a lot) or turn off completely. If they do, your ignition switch should be ok. If not, the switch will need replacement.

....thanx for the reply's peeps,

I should have said,

ths starter is turning the engine over fine,

the ignition switch is ok, everything lights up.

it just wont start turning engine over with key,
BUT it will start with a bump or a tow & runs great!

never encounter'd this problem B4.

So with the key the starter won't turn, but when power applied directly to the starter it will turn but not start the car.

Ignition switch has two sides, one to put the ignition on, the other to trigger the starter, its still the switch or cabling thereto.

Cheers

no, sorry again!

the starter turns engine over fine,
lots of power just wont start when I turn starter with key.

but will start with a bump or a tow.
very strange!

Rally already said its the ignition switch. The starter is turning but the switch isnt connecting the ignition. Fit a new switch with the original lock and key.

.....:bang:

so what your saying is,

although the ignition (key) is turning starter
& engine is turning over good, and fast as per norm,

it's all down to the ignition being faulty?
still can't grasp this!

ok I'll try fitting another ignition switch.

tamucha.

The ignition switch has to make lots of separate connections. When you turn the key to the start position it add the starter motor to the stuff that's already connected. If the switch is faulty it may spin the starter but lose one of the other connections so the engine wont start.

Your tests with push starts pretty much prove its the switch as it will start when the key is in the normal run position. Normally we'd say its the battery but you've fitted a new one. You've also tried it with jump leads and the engine spins over fine but wont start so its not the starter. Final proof may be to put the ignition on and directly trigger the starter with a test wire. If that starts the engine you will know its the ignition key.

i think he might mean factors such as is there a spark? fuel supply? etc etc. im having the same problem with my nexia, shel turn over but wont start, unfortunately i cant bump her because (at the moment) shes an automatic. im still having the problem now, and im suspecting it could be the crank senor, it could be that on yours?

I've changed crankshaft sensor, could be a faulty one?
good spark new carb etc.

I've also thought of the alarm imobilizer,
but I would have thought the of it was the 'lizer,
it would'nt start atall, even with a bump or tow?
