Hi Everyone

My daughter has recently bought a 2001 Puno 1.2. The car is excellent except the fan heater isn’t working properly. I have read a LOT of posts on this forum about very similar problems but I have tried to fix it but still it’s not working. Here is what’s happened:

1) The fan heater control stopped working – it was just a smooth movement from 0 to 4, no “click” on the numbered positions.
2) Purchased a second hand replacement on eBay. Tested that the four positions of the fan closed circuit between the 5th connector and each of the other four connectors in turn. Installed it.
3) Fan heater still not working.
4) Thought it might the resistor, but after tracing through the wiring (and reading lots of posts on this forum), it seems that the resistor is not used when the fan is on maximum. Tried the fan on maximum – still not working.
5) Checked for the earth problem with the connector before the motor – no problem.
6) As far as I can see, it is the earth connection that is switched through the resistor (except when the fan is in position 4 where the earth is directly connected to the fan). I have checked with a meter, and the other connection to the fan is NOT 12v, it’s nothing.
7) Checked the 7.5A fuse in the fusebox next to the driver, and it’s fine.
8) Changed the heater fan system relay with the Electrical pump system relay and still not working.

So I am stumped now. I can’t think of anything else that would prevent power reaching the heater fan.

Any help, advice or ideas would be very much appreciated!

Hi there tyronehowe,

Welcome to the forum. We like a challenge here and it's good to see that you have done some preliminary work on this. I see you've done some testing of resistance and voltage so let's dive in.....

I'm assuming for now that you ain't got aircon there (that would complicate matters a little).

The circuit has two parts, one to power the relay (let's say circuit A) and one to power the fan via the relay contact (circuit B).

Need to diagnose which circuit is faulty. Does the relay R8 click in when ignition is turned on? You can test this by leaving the ignition on and pulling the relay out - listen for the clicking. If no click, trace power through circuit A - here's the path:

Battery (+) to engine fusebox, through Fuse F3 (20A), out on pin B31 to ign switch.
Ign switch - in on pin A2, out on pin B1, to fusebox inside car.
Fusebox - in on pin E1, through Fuse F31, out on pin A7 to relay R8 (back at engine fusebox via pin B11 on fusebox).
Relay R8 - 12V supply in on pin 85 (from F31), earth on pin 86. Earth connection out of fusebox on pin B26 to earth point E3 (LH inner wing).

OK, if the relay is operating/clicking and the fan still doesn't blow, we need to move on to Circuit B.

The relay should be supplying power to the motor and as you have deduced, the other side of the motor is earthed via the resistor pack. You say there's no power to the motor so provided that the relay has energised, the problem is in the first half of Circuit B. Here goes:

Battery (+) to engine fusebox Fuse F8 (30A) and on to Relay R8.
Relay R8, in on pin 30, through contact, out on pin 87.
Out of fusebox on pin B32 and off to motor pin 1.
Motor pin 2 is earth side, to switch pin 5. With switch on max, pin 5 connects to pin 1, which is earthed at E3 (LH inner wing).

See how you go and report back if more info needed.

Hi red

Many thanks for your very comprehensive answer!!

I will carefully go through your instructions tomorrow morning and report back.

Thanks again.

how about cuttin off the connector and using electrical wire block instead, my cables where fine, no signs of damage & the fan didnt work, so cut if straight off and just joined the wires, and fixed it....taped it up and havent had any trouble since...

Hi everyone

Thanks again for you help.

Good news is that the fan heater is now working!!

The embarrassing bit is that the fuse for the heater fan was missing – I guess I must have placed it back in (the wrong) vacant hole during testing. So I put the fuse back in the proper position and now all is working.

So I (or I should say my daughter) is very happy now!

All the best

Just a note to you Guys Had my fan stop working in the week only worked on position 4 . All advise told me it was a burnt out resistor!! But turned out to be a poor connection a wriggle of the connector to the resistor did the trick !!! So worth a try before you buy

Thats odd....
meaning it was needing lots current to get a connection

Lots of current + poor connection = Heat

Heat you dont want there
