I'm in the process of replacing a blown engine (1.2 16v) with one that is not. Original is still in the car but stripped to piston level. The manual suggests that to remove the engine the gearbox and transmission has to come out too as a single unit.
I'm thinking I can split the block off from the gearbox leaving the gearbox supported and winch out the block.
Anyone got relevant experience they might like to share?

(Incidentally for anyone venturing down into the depths of their Punto engines, as above, don't be mystified by the fact your metric spanners don't fit the engine Earth strap or 1 out of the 3 large bolt heads that hold the alternator in place. That's because fiat seem to have had an outbreak of Imperial sizes, the earth strap is 1/2inch and the odd alternator is 5/8. Odd don't you think?)

Cheers, Chris.

Perfectly fine to do that, I have just done this last week! Only thing I can say is take the engine out with a hoist.
I jacked the car up and slid it under but the driveshaft almost popped out of the gearbox! So I don't recommend that! Unless you jack the gearbox as you do the car aswell.

That's good news. Nice to know it can be done. Been off this morning to scrounge a hoist from a pal in the trade so everything will be lined up for when I can get on with the job. Excellent.

Hi. I,m going to try taking the block out ot my mk2 punto hgt 1.8. Can I use the same procedure with a hoist? Is it much more work to take the gearbox out aswell? I would be very grateful for any help on this. The car has been sitting in my garage for about a year now so I want to get cracking on it now!

Yeah! Bottom end is knackered. Ive got a recon head but wasnt sure what the best way of taking the block out. Hopefully without taking the gearbox out?

The gear box moves to the side once the drive shafts are disconnected. Best to research the gearbox removal stages so you see the work you are going to do to move the gearbox as people do it many different ways. it took me 2 days to get my gear box in and out with a 3 hour repair on the box and i had no rusty bolts to deal with. I did not want to open up the wheel bearings or the universal joints on the drive shafts.

I did my 8v engine swap
I left gearbox and rad in place

Bad idea!

As my engine disconnected from the box
It rotated and made it 19x harder to remove

In the engine we stuggled to get box out - and the managed to get engine out

It totally is 10x easier todo engine and box as 1 and lower it down onto the ground!
Then use hoist to pick the car up

Another nice tip
Is the ewiring loom disconnects from fuse box via 1 big connector! Easy!!

Jusy have to remove battery feed and nrgative eartth and 3 mounts and u can practically drop the engine
(Coolant out obviously)
