A vibration at idle is not good, suggests that something has become unbalanced in the engine. Any hesitation in the power?
Is it bad that I actually understood that?

Check the coils/plugs are all working.
Remove and refit each lead in turn with the engine running, note which leads make no difference.

Do as rallycinq describes. What we are getting at is that the imbalance is caused by one of the cylinders misfiring.
Check the plugs are giving a good spark first, then get back to us. Since the steering has also failed, I would suspect there is a problem with the vehicle's 12v power supply, be it the alternator, belt or battery.

Ahh because the car I just got has the steering light on but it's not heavy at all so hoping just a new battery, we'll soon find out. I'll swap batterys over and see if my one works ok in it
