is this for when u replace the HG when u take of the tapit off? does it start from the left or the right?

quick reply would be great coz cover in oil doing the job!

Is this 22lb/ft right for a s reg 1.2i 8v punto???

i followed th instructions on the forumn and had just snapped a head bolt which is now sitting flush in the bottom of the engine... the gauge didnt click or anything so i was just tightening quarter turn each in order then BANG no1 bolt sheered clean off...

any advice on A what is the correct torque for my car and B how the hell do i get the brocken head bolt out??

cheers

Hi,

Yes everything was new. its either the 22lb/ft is wrong or the old mans torque wrench isnt clicking when it should (or calibrated wrong).

i have taken the head back of but its snapped flush with the bottom end so there no way of getting any grips on it.

some other bods on the net have mentioned drilling it out using left handed drill bits but dont wanna do that if i can help it.

if i hadnt have lost my job a few months ago i would have just paid someone to do it for me :-(

You can get left-handed tapered drill bits specifically for digging out snapped bolts. With a bit of luck, they pull out the bolt without damaging the threads in the block. However, not the end of the world if the threads do get damaged since you can always put a Helicoil insert in to replace the threads. In fact, some engine builders use spiral thread inserts as a matter of course when working since they are much stronger than the threaded iron/aluminium you would normally be tightening into.

With regard to the torque, I believe that torque wrenches are supposed to be calibrated every 18 months (at least that's what my calibration certificate says). They also have to be stored with the right spring tension set, and some are horrifically inaccurate at the 22 lb ft level if their range goes up to ~100 lb ft.

oh, no i didnt coat them...should i have done?

i dug out my tap and die set and luckily in there there was a left handed thread screw extractor thing... after some carefuly dot punch and drilling i managed to screw it in and out it came with no damage to the thread at all!!...sucess!!

i have been back to get another bolt and the place did me a copy of some info in their punto head sets for the bolts. it has the tightening order.. not sure which to use but it says:

Anziehen/ (then a symbol which means 'use new cyliner head bolts) 20Nm
Tightening/ 30Nm
Serrage/ 90 degree
Apriete 90 degree

not sure what all that means...

i dont know when the wrench was last calibrated, its my dads and he's only used it once a few years back.

I never used a torque wrench for my head bolts, just a wrench with a big bar attached for extra leverage.
Hand tight then 90 degrees more for each in order then another 90 degrees in order again. No problems so far (y)

Does the 2nd angel 90 degrees and the 3 angle 90 degrees mean a half turn then round again another half turn ?l
