hi i have the mk2 punto sporting 2002 paid 1600 for it next day car would not start at all the is not enought power to start i have charged the battery too and then i checked the starter motor and it was red hot anyone know whats wrong with it thank you

sounds like starter motor is gettin jammed and burning up when your tryin to start it. Maybe sticky solonoid...

Try to firmly tap the starter motor solonoid a couple of times with like the wooden handle of a hammer. (btw the solonoid is the top smaller part of the starter which the wires go to) then try to start it and you might get a slow jerky turn over, if not then get yourself another starter and replace it.

Mine went asewel wen i took it off the pinion was full of gunky oily stuff, so i completely stripped down the starter and washer the pinion and cover where all sludge was with parafin, made sure it was fully dryed then rebuilt it tested it and was as good as new.

is it trying to start or just no effort whatsoever?
hi thanks for replying i have brought a new starter motor waiting for it to come now when i jump start it rolling it. it started then there was a bang noise came from the engine.

Sounds to me like you could do with a new battery and a new starter motor, and have a mechanic give the car a once over just to be sure. Better to be safe than sorry if you ask me :)

Also, if you have just bought the car or not had it long, you should check that the cambelt/timing belt has been changed (they should be changed at around 60k miles).

Another thing to look out for are radiator switches, radiator fans & motors... I had to change mine as soon as I Bought the car as the fan was not kicking in and I didn't want the car to overheat...

Another is the City button (I'm not sure if your car will have this) but there are quite common problems with these.

Any problems with Punto's should be easy (and reasonably cheap) to fix, as long as they are not left to get worse. You will love the car and find hardly any problems, as long as you drive it right!

Good luck with the car and enjoy the modding & racing! (y)

just to add other common problems are:
*hand brake light flashing on
*airbags deactivated
*coolant temperature sensor faulty
*wiper sindle washer will wear away and disengange from the linage
*bonnet cable snapping

check all these over so you dont lead yourself to other problems, check and examine to see if everything seems right

errrm mate punto power steering is electric not hydraulic so i dont think you needed a new power steering pump.

hi thank you for replying also the power steering pump under the steering wheel stops working when you drive it i have the whole complete unit just needs fitting. this maybe the problem not sure thought

Ive had my 01 punto sporting only a few months and for a €150 (yes one hundred and fifty) car its rather more refined and smoother then my everyday car. However there are a few problems:
Brake lights were stuck on. A new unit for the pedal was about £8 from a main dealer
When using the quick wipe on the wipers, if released in mid wipe the wipers will stagger back, as if its not getting enough power
The 2nd day driving it the catch failed, smashing my windscreen and bonnet (n)

These are problems ive had, they may be isolated but worth considering looking at.

As for modding, when I got my sporting it had the following mods already:
Straight thru exhaust with twin pipes
300w front speakers
350w 6x9 pioneers at rear
Impact strips removed and de-badged
Full Abarth kit
17inch Lenso s7's complete with abarth centre caps
Eilbach 50mm lowering springs
CDA intake
Custom abarth interior accessories

A starter motor can get upset if the engine is so tight that its having to work to hard to try and turn it over.Furthermore if the person that sold it to you did not have the car registered in their name chances are they are in the trade so you can ask for help.

Brin, you've just pointed out the fact that there are so many problems with Puntos!! We're not supposed to do that! haha ;)

Like I said earlier though... if the car has been looked after, it should be okay and any problems should be easily (and cheaply) fixed :p

Mods... I'd keep it simple and smooth:
  • Alloys (15"/16")
  • De-badging at rear
  • Tinted windows (back 3)
  • Tinted rear lights
  • Aero wiper blades (really good blades!)
  • Xenon headlights & LED sidelights (bright white)
  • Beesting Aerial
  • Music system (CD Player & Sub?)
  • Angel eyes - or you could just de-tango & put halo's in
  • Colour-coding door mirrors & handles
  • Possibly de-bumpstrip the doors
I think Punto's look best clean and simple mods :p

my punto wipers keep fallin outta the linkages, i have no workin wipers now lmao before it wer only passenger side not workin now both have fallen out, not good in this rainy weather, they just fall out straight away, gonna try to repair them, if it dunt work out gonna have to buy new ones.

I aint botherin with aero wiper blades until i get the wipers working lol

BTW i take good car of my punto i think maybe previous owner didnt bother with it maybe, cos if its taken care of youll have only common wear and tear problems example brakes, tyres ect...

Yeah I agree.. as long as it's been looked after since new like lol

And you really should get the Aero Wipers.. 8 quid for the pair, Ebay!!! And they just clip straight on, they're an all in one as well so no messing about with the dodgy strips n everythin! :)

I need an Aero Wiper for my rear, it's rubbish.. just smudges the water :(

But deffo get the Aero blades, best 8 quid I (well my boyfriend) ever spent haha :yum: they clear the windscreen really really good, even when they're like dry! I can't explain how good they are, just get some and see!! Haha
