Hi,

I have a Punto 2001 1.2 16V ELX (petrol).

In the middle of Jan the amber engine warning light came on & I noticed a distinct lack of power.

I tool it to my usual mechanic/garage, they did an ECU scan & advised that it could be a couple of things (think he mentioned something to do with the cat)but they would start at the cheapest first, so they changed the plugs & leads.

Everything seemed fine, them about a week later the light came on again, however this time there didn't seem to be the drop in power as before.

Took it back to the garage, they re-scanned it and said that the error code must not have cleared properly from last time.

2 months later everything has been fine up until today, took the car out this morning & everything was ok.

Got in it this afternoon & approx 5 mins into the journey the amber warning light appears & stays on, yet with no loss of power.

I have it booked in with them again later in the week.

Anyone experienced this before or have any ideas as to a) what it could be and b) how much it's going to cost me?

Thanks for the help.

Find a garage with the proper equipment.

The garage are using a generic code reader and trying to guess at the fault.

Hmmmm, do you think they're just stabbing in the dark?

How can I tell if a garage has the proper equipment, apart from going to a dealer (which I assume will cost an arm and a leg)?

Get yourself an ECU interface/lead. See my post elsewhere on this forum for cheap ECU scanner (£8.20 inc. postage). It plugs into the OBD socket and into a USB socket on a laptop. Check out the free software from FiatECUScan.net

You can see for yourself what the error are, reset them and do loads more (e.g. real-time graphs of all sorts of parameters)
