hi i have a mk2 8valve punto and i have got an oil leak coming from the rocker cover gasket, i have changed the gasket 3 times now, ive used gaskets from unipart, quontoc and a genuine fiat gasket and i have used black silicon inconjuction with the gasket but it still leaks :bang:.

can any one suggest what i should do to stop it leaking and whould this leak affect my m.o.t.

Are you sure its coming from the camshaft cover--- it could be from the camshaft oil seal ---- usually the rh side-----we have had 3 puntos now
( i know--- we are masochists) and everyone has had this seal leak.

thanks for the reply most of the oil is coming from the left hand side of the rocker cover

There is one each end so could still be a camshaft seal,we had them both replaced on our previous mk1 punto, but because there was quite a few miles on the clock at this stage, the garage said the camshaft wasnt running truely concentric in the support bearings so it wasnt long before they were leaking again.
We have a mk2 1.2 8v 2002 punto now and this also has a slight oil leak from the rh side of the cover --- i dont think it is coming from the camshaft cover gasket----- i suspect it is the rh camshaft oil seal.

Yup, easy enough to do, but I would wash down the engine completely so you know exactly where the leak is from.

What torque are you applying to the head bolts?

Cheers

My local motor factors tells me the seal/'o' ring is a dealer only part ?

Can anyone confirm or deny this ?

Mine is leaking quite badly and really its not driveable so to get anywhere to source a replacement seal is a complete PITA.....

Any help appreciated..

I think the seals themselves even from fiat are relatively cheap----- i can remember my garage saying though that they have to be fitted the correct way round---- so providing your camshaft is running concentric you should be alright.
If you do get a quote from a garage for fitting the seals can you post it on here as it is some time now since we had our previous punto done,or if you do it yourself --- if it was easy to do,as our latest mk2 punto is also leaking, but only slightly at the moment.---- cheers

I've got it stripped down in the garden right now :)

Took approx 5 minutes to get it all apart....

Air box off.....Ignition module cover off.....Plug leads off.....Ignition module removed......'O' ring in your hand :)

Its not the price that is the main issue......Its getting somewhere to buy one thats the big problem...

My 'O' ring is split and has gone very hard and brittle and leaks badly so I dont want to drive it to be honest....Plus I have to put it all back together to drive it anyway.....Not difficult just a pain as its all got to come apart again when I get back to repair it....

Did some searching and there is an Alfa dealer about 1 mile from me and they do Fiat parts as well...

What makes it worse is I used to work for the same company but in their truck division :eek:

Phoned them up and they haven't got one but will get one in for this afternoon.....

£4 and a few pence + vat....

Result, and the weather is nice for a walk.

Is there a guide available on how to change the camshaft seal?
I looked at haynes, and seems to be overly complicated, but maybe I'm seeing too much into it.

Sadly, leaky rocker covers aren't confined to Puntos - Cinquecentos get them too! I'm now on my 3rd rocker cover gasket in less than two years and, yes, that oil keeps-a-comin'! Sick of wiping the stuff off. Sealant's no use either - garage saying the only cure is a new rocker cover but that's out of the question at the moment. Interesting to hear comments re. camshaft seals.

Would you say that this leak looks like it is coming from the cam seal or somewhere else? I think its coming from the one on the side of the ignition coil as there is no oil on the timing belt side. Really need some help as i have no idea what it could be, its my first car and already had so much go wrong with it:mad:(n) any help is really appreciated, thanks :)
