Come on fella... DIY just the parts? Full re-build...? half engine, professionally done inc VAT? Do some phone calls....

Oh do some phone calls to engine re-builders ;)

How much will an engine re-build cost on 1.2 8v mk2?

Assuming you mean from top to toe (cylinder head skim and new hg , shims etc, piston rings , rebore? crank bearings etc etc etc and quite a few hours labour i think you d be lucky to see change out of a £1000 and possibly more.

Just a guesstimate(and could be widely off the mark) to give you a starting ball park figure)

If your mk 2 has gone belly up a low mileage replacement engine is really the only ecenomical repair when car values is brought into the equation.

If it's "just" for normal, everyday use, swap out the engine for a known good one or something bigger and better (see the 1.4 16v swaps on the Cinq/Sei forum). Or, if you can do most of the work yourself, a simple refresh can be relatively cheap.

Otherwise, you can build something faster and stronger than the original unit, but it'll cost.

Wouldn't other things be required though? newer engine loom, gbox, brakes and etc?

You'd need a different ECU, maybe aftermarket, although a 1.2 16v could be reprogrammed to suit. Get the 1.4 16v gearbox (we're talking the Stilo/Grande Punto/etc motor), Punto GT front calipers and disks. Usual attention to suspension, wheels, tyres.

Probably all doable for less than a "fully" rebuilt 1242 8v.

Thanks for the replys, just looks like piston rings have had it and the cylinder head needs skimming. Possibly rebore. I have no idea. Had a headgasket change in may and obviously was just a bad job! should have never bought the car. Now i have 2 puntos worth nothing! and can't put a bigger engine or mods due to insurance prices! I'm already paying about 1000 on insurance! thats not even fully comp

Is it possible to drop a 1.8l HGT engine into my 1.2l 8v PUNTO MK2

Forget about prices...
If i get a HGT engine, gear box and ECU could i drop it in and will it work or will it rip my punto to peices.

Thanks

BTW do engine rebuild yourself punto 8v engines are only small with the right tools its pretty simple just takes time, patients and effort.

I need the car 7 days a week for work. 80+ miles a day, so i don't have time or patience! also don't have the right tools. and I'd presume u need to upgrade the manifolds and such with the engine aswel but if you're replacing everything all that's left is the frame so should be fine

Just lifted my car today, the head was roasted and the compression was gone in cylinder 2 after 70,000 miles. its a 2000 punto, 1.2 8v, so got an 04 with 45,000 miles from a breakers, got the engine, clutch, covers for £200. Took it a test run and got back and the oil was leaking from the sump, and the old one wouldn't fit. then once that was fixed, when idling the car was revving itself and when i was revving the lights were flickering. Still like it, think it could need the errors cleared but not too sure, anyone know what could be wrong.

And the steering light keeps flickering but no heavy steering

Thought it might have been the throttle cable myself, but checked the vacuum connections and they were OK. I have to clear the error messages tomorrow anyway so will get it checked. thanks.
