Hey, i was involved in an accident the other day where a guy went straight into the front passenger wing and bumper. He has accepted responsibilty for the accident and the car has just been taken to get assesed a couple of hours ago.
The passenger door doesn't open, the steering seems a bit off and the car is in great condition. Well it was up untill the crash.

Just wondering if my car could be a write off? And what would happen if it is?

Many thanks guys.

Here are some pictures to show the damage:

Most likely a write off I'd say. You're wheel doesn't look perfectly straight either. If it is a write off, you'll have to buy a new car n wait for money to come through from insurance which can take weeks. Unless the car is safe to drive still in which case you can drive it till the money comes! Or i did when mine was written off anyway. Most insurances tell you to keep the car and minus scrappage value off the value of the car they give you!
Then you sell it for parts n get more! or you can choose to get it fixed and re-MOT it! but then it's CAT D and insurance costs lots more on it

I was looking to buy a new Punto anyway, i got ripped off on this one. £1,800 for a Mia
I was sort of hoping it wasn't a write off though, cause i love it to bits
But what you're saying is that if they write off the car, they give you money for it AND you get the car back? Holy moley.
And you don't think its worth fixing if its a write off either?

Thanks for the quick reply mate.

Do you actually know what your talking about?!?

Mate, if its written off, you'll get payout of market value. As accident isn't your fault (you claiming straight off of the other persons insurance or through yours?) they 3rd partys insurance (insurance of the one who hit you) have no right to the salvage of your car.

Insist on having the vehicle back, then plonk it on eBay and sell it to make a bit more money.

They should also supply a courtesy car for a reasonable amount of time for you to be able to get another car.

Also, if you want the 3rd partys insurance also have no obligation to be able to write the car off, so if you insist on it being repaired, they'll have to.

The advantage of not being at fault.

Jon.

Not true at all, i had my car written off a while ago from slight damage to the front, yes they give you market value but what i said is. Alot of them noe don't bother taking the car! say the value is 1000, scrap value is 70 they will pay you 930 and leave the car with you! And I was told I couldn't have it repaired because it was more than the value. Whether i wanted it to or not. All this was from 3rd party insurance aswel! So everything i said was from my experience

Cheers,
Yeah its through the 3rd parties insurance.
How much do you reckon the market value of it would be? Brought it for around £1800 (ripped off)
I would prefer to get a new car rather than have this fixed, then i could maybe get a Sporting.
And how long do you think i would get a courtesy car for? Days? Weeks?

Many thanks.

You have the courtesy car as long as it takes to get a new one. and you need to specify age, model, mileage, cond. etc to get a valuation

2001 Mk2 Mia. 65000 miles. I've had it about 5-6 months
It has very light scratches, but you can only see them because its black
Small patch of rust bubbles on roof. Haven't had any engine problems. Anything else?

Not really, car was in **** condition anyway and they gave me more than twice the amount i payed for it plus then i scrapped it and sold the alloys i had on it. Plus i was off work for 2 weeks because of injury so i came out alright (y) was a nice car otherwise mind you

I see what you mean then. Didn't do to badly then.

At OP. It all depends how long it takes them to decide if to write it off or not. So let me get this straight, they've taken your car for acessment and left you with nothing to drive? I'd contact them and insist on a courtesy car, once written off they'll normally let you have it upto about 2weeks max (enough to let cheque clear)

Jon.

And how much do you think i'd be able to sell it for, if i get it back?

scrap - 70 quid
eBay - not much more since its damaged and written off, maybe less
Parts - alot more :p ( need to know how to take all parts off, send em all, and storage for whatever u can't sell! alot of hassle tbh but worth it if you can do all that)

alot of insurance companys dont do courtesy cars as standard, i know mine dont. and even if you do alot dont even given you the car untill they decide if its going to be fixed or not. right now... he probably wont get one

Because it's 3rde party insurnce you claim for the courtesy car off them! doesn't matter if you're insurance covers it or not! and btw I'll have you're drivers side sun visor! :p Broke mine the other day
