Hello to all. Ive only just registered after searching for an answer to my problem and running into this awesome forum!

I have a 2001 Fiat Punto Sporting, Automatic. (110,500 kms). I have just had the head gasket replaced by a very respected repair place.

A couple of days ago the auto-gearbox red light started blinking. The odd thing is that the car and transmission is running perfect. There seems to be no problem whatsoever other than the light blinking that is!

I have searched through the forum here and cant find anyone who had the same problem, those who have had the light blinking also had the transmission go.

Anybody have any ideas as to why the light would be blinking yet the gearbox working fine? Could it be that its about to go?

I confess to not being very knowledgeable at all with cars, engines, gearboxes etc.. let alone specifically on a Fiat.

I dont have the cars books nor a Haynes manual and i live in Greece.

What things could I run through before taking into the repair shop?? I did check the transission fluid and its just below the right level, the colour is a little yellowish-brown. more brown than red.

Also could it be a fuse related issue? Is there a fuse related to the blinking light/gearbox?? WHich fuse is it, as I said i dont have the car's book's nor anything like a HAynes manual :(

Finally (sorry for the lengthy post) could it be related tot he fact that a few days ago the 'belt' like part in the auto-gear selector in the car broke and is loose inside the box. But like i sadi i can move the gear selector (P, D, R etc..) with no problem even though the belt is torn inside. Could this have anything to do with the blinking light? I did try to pull the box out (without unscrewing) to try and remove the part but it wouldnt come off (obviously, thats when i realised there are screws!).

So please if somebody can help answer these:

1. Why Auto-Gearbox light blinking although gearbox working fine? Sign it could go?

2. Is there an Auto-Gearbox fuse and where/which fuse on the panel exactly is it please?

3. Could the fact that the 'belt' like part in the gear selector has snapped be related or just coincidence? Also maybe the fact that I tried (without too much force) to pull it out without unscrewing?

4. Finally, what is the correct name for that gear-selector belt? Im attaching pic.

Im anxiously waiting for your replies. Thanks a bunch in advance...:(
thanks, i appreciate it.

chris

Hi Dave. Searching for Speedgear definitely returned many results, thanks.

So i should be fairly at ease that its not an actual gearbox mechanical problem? As i said car and gears work just fine, only the light is flashing.

Anybody know where I can get a replacement for the torn 'belt' in the gear selector? Do i just pull the chrome box up/out or do I need to unscrew the 4 screws which I can see from the side inside the box?

Please let me know guys, really hopeless with these things:eek:
