Hi, hoping someone can offer some advice. I have a 01 punto and a couple of weeks ago the red steering wheel light came on after I'd been driving for about 20mins.

It's done this a couple of times after I've been driving for 15-20mins, but I've notice no difference at all in the steering (i.e. it hasn't gone heavy).

We've twice skidded round a corner in the rain (light had never been on the first time, but was on the second time). Maybe we were going a bit fast, but put it into fiat as I didn't want to chance it.

They charged me £65 for a diagnostic test and told me that I need a new electric steering column which will cost £700 (probably half the cost of the car!).

Has anyone else had this problem. It seems so extreme to go from having a car which has been driving absolutely fine to one that needs £700 worth of work doing to it!

Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I had the feeling because the light was only coming on sometimes that it was a loose connection or something.

I had the same issue with my stilo abarth 2.4 54 plate, I had a nightmare with fiat garage they sent steering unit to get it reconditioned quoted 570 when it reterned 2 wks later it would not link with the car! took 3 more trips back to the reconditioning company before they gave up, ended up paying 1200 for new unit and labour took 4 weeks in total but fine now! reconditioned units usually do the job.

You may find it's just the motor and relays which
have worn out. Motor is replaceable as a unit
bolt off bolt on without having to recentre
the steering through diagnotics.
