i have a fiat punto mk2 (2000) x-reg 1.2 8valve(5speed).
the gearbox needs replacing as its leaking oil onto the clutch.
iv been looking on ebay for one and one of the listings said the gearbox would fit all 5 speed cars. it didnt mention engine size.

my question is...... do i have to get a gearbox for a mk2 punto 1.2 8v or can i get any mk2 punto gearbox as long as its 5speed?

lets say i got a 1.2 16v (5speed) gearbox... would this still fit?

or does it have to definatly be a 1.2 8v gearbox?

thanks for reading.

this is the link to the gearbox listing that says it is 5spped and will fit all mk2 and mk3 5speed cars.i wouldnt go for the bid on this as iv seen cheeper on ebay.but im just curious about what they say if its true or not.

it mentions it on the right on the middle paragraph in small writing

Yes as long as its for a petrol 1.2 8v or 1.2 16v it will fit. You could even put a 6 speed in from a 1.2 16v sporting but as these boxes are rarer you will be very lucky to get one for cheaper than the 5speed box.

so as long as its a petrol 1.2 gearbox?wat if it was over a 1.2 but still 5 speed?
and you said i could fit 6speed in? what diffrence would that do to performance ect? and would i need anything else diffrent to get it to work? new drive shaft, diffrent clutch, gear selecter etc?

Any fire engine box will fit i.e:

1.2 8v mk2
1.2 16v mk2
1.2 8v mk2b
1.2 16v mk2b
1.4 16v mk2b
1.2 8v grande
1.2 16v grande
1.4 16v grande

Will all fit, 5 and 6 speeds.

You just need the mount from a 6 speed box and the box to fit it.

No difference in performance tbh.

ok so wich of them is 5speed and will fit my car without changing anything else? jus go straight on. no new mounts no nothin.just direct fit?

Only 1.2 16v and 1.4 16v sportings and some other 1.2 16v's variants came with 6 speed as far as I know.

wait?
so a grande 1.4 16v box would fit my mk2 1.2 8v?

As far as I am aware ChrisUK has a 1.4 16v grande box in his 1.4 16v mk2b.

Since the mkb2 1.4 16v box fits a 1.2 8v I don't see why it wouldn't.

PM him to confirm...

so basicly your saying. any mk2, mk2b, grande puntos 5speed gear box will fit any other with 5speed. and you can fit 6speed gearbox to a punto with a 5speed gearbox if you get the correct engine mounts?
