swapped the one I took off (assumed it was still good) with the one left on car (cleared fault with scanner) light came back on

Plugs are about 4000 miles old 6 months

Car runs and starts OK but tick over is a bit lumpy not noticed anything else.

any body got some pointers I could try

ECU may be fried - if the coil fails it's a common fault that they spike the ECU and damage it.

What were the error codes that you got on the scanner, or is it just the P0351?

When you say lumpy, is it misfiring or just rough in general?

yes just the one error P0351

No misfire just rough at low revs, revs rising and falling about 100 on a 900 ish tick over.
thanks

What did you use for reset; I could sure do with one of those...(y)

Whilst I'm sure there's loads of nasties, you could start with some basics and ensure that TDC sensor is clean and <1.5mm from the crank and spray the internals of the injection system with carb-cleaner. Look for the throttle position sensor and ensure the cables and connection are sound. There's a plastic tube running from the manifold to a little black cover on the bulkhead; do things get a lot worse when you pull the tube off[*]? Likewise the connections to the EVAP canister, in fact you can disconnect the solenoid connector completely until you know things are running properly.

[*] you might also fully depress the foot-brake pedal a couple of times then start up the engine. Does the pedal seems to fall away under your foot? If not then you may have a vacuum issue that is impacting upon the absolute pressure sensor, most obviously at idle.

Someone here kindly sent me to a forum run by a company that makes and sells ECU readers. One or two of the FIAT specialists there insist that when faced with circumstances like yours that mechanics replace plugs and leads with genuine FIAT parts to remove the possibility of insufficient/excessive resistance confusing the ECU systems.

You might also try simply disconnecting the battery earth for 30 minutes to erase the temporary settings/fault history in the ECU, ensuring that starts up using its base map and nothing else. That certainly seems to have worked for some of us.

julianps sorry missed your question last time I bought a MaxScan obd11 code reader a GS500 not the best (read expensive) but not the cheapest, it does what I want got it off ebay UK seller eco-m-uk very fast delivery I chose that one as it does can-bus for other car passat and displays live data'

onto punto
TDC sensor looks ok cleaned anyway
brake peddle pulled in well on start so vacuum O.K.
don't have any carb cleaner so had to miss that bit out, tps and wires look OK
as for the plastic tube running from the manifold to a little black cover on the bulkhead well I can't find it I've got water, vacuum, petrol, cables but nothing like what's been mentioned also can,t find an evac canister I wonder if this car 2001 dosnt have them?

anyhow the other coil pack that I ordered arrived Saturday so I thought what the hell fit it anyway, did so and mil light still on cleared fault with scanner restart engine still mil on (bugger) had enough today packed up tools and moved car wayhay mil light off restarted engine a few times went for a run it's running the best it ever has (fingers crossed)
so happy and thanks to all
so it looks like both coil packs were bad enough to put on the mil light or I have disturbed something or spraying around with wd-40 has done the trick. I now wait and see!

Hi proview1122,

Thanks for the update and congratulations on getting things running again.

Did you need to buy or make a connector between the OBD2 and FIAT connector, or is yours (2001) OBDs already?

its obd, (maybe one of the first) the cable that came with it fits the outlet, which is behind a cover below the dashboard to the right of steering wheel. the connector is at the bottom below the fuses and relays well it is on mine

and guess what, used car to do school bus run and light is on again (damm)
will have yet another look later.:bang:
