Hi,

My fiat is at a garage because the gearbox oil leaked (seal went apparently) which meant the gear box and clutch has broken. So I got it towed to the garage and have just been given a quote of £950 for them to replace it. I just can't help but think they might be ripping me off! Does this sound outragios or reasonable? please note, i'm female and so don't plan on doing it myself!

Really appreciate if anyone can give me advice!

hi. was the car driven much after all the oil leaked out?

What age is the car, and what type of box does it have (manual or a secta/speedgear/autobox)

£950 seems very expensive.

Personally i wouldn't pay anything more than £200 for a gearbox, then you're looking at around £50 for the clutch. This means they are charging you £700 in labour, which is taking the pee a bit.

Where abouts in the country are you, someone might be able to suggest a better garage.

assuming its a manual 5 speed:

a local scrapyard will supply a gearbox for less than £100.
brand new clutch kit is £50.
fitting is £100 at my local garage, but you could say up to £200 for garages elsewhere.

i'd pay £250 in total, meaning anything over £450 is a disgrace imo. £950 is beyond belief. i would ask for a breakdown of what that cost is made up from. if they are suggesting a brand new gearbox from a fiat dealer then fair enough the price makes sense, but who in their right mind would get a brand new gearbox for a 1.2 punto?

Thanks for replying. It's a 2004 1.2 punto. I live in Cambridge, and the garage i've taken it to (GP Motors). I can't drive it any where else now as it can't be driven. I'm tempted to do a part exchange, but don't think it's worth it. I'm clueless as to what to do! ahh!
