Different tread patterns Illegal?

Rite i was told by my old fella that having different tread patterns are illegal so ill have to change mine if thats true

I just want to take other peoples opinions on this as i dont want to be driving down the road and a copper pulls me over and gives me points and a fine or summert.

Pics just to show you what i mean. there all the same size wheels and everything just a different tread the one on the right looks like its more wider tyre than the standard left one though.

Right rear

Left Rear

From my theory test practise, its perfectly fine to have diff tread pattern! It's just the tread you would get pulled on ( if it was illegal )

And if there were different sized tyres/ tyres of different construction (i.e. radial or crossply) on the same axle.

Re: Different tread patterns Illegal?

This always strikes me as odd. It is illegal to replace brake pads, disks and shoes in anything but pairs, yet tyres seem to be an absolute free-for-all. I am pretty sure that a car with brand new 'Traction AA' tyres on the left, and 1.7mm remoulds on the right would be dangerous in the dry, and suicide in the wet.

yeah i have to agree on that one but im sure they will bring it in force soon enough that it will be illegal.

I stand corrected, I cannot find a law that states this. I wonder what it is then that differentiates matching brakes from matching tyres then, apart from good common sense. I don't think there is a reputable garage in the land that will fit mismatched brakes to your car, but nearly every one will happily replace one tyre.
