hi,

i am new to this forum and it is great. i have a 2000 1.2 8v mk2 punto. it idles and starts great, but when i rev the car the revs get stuck to where ever i have revved it to, say 4 grand it sticks at 4 grand.

Its sometimes drives perfect but recently its doing it everytime i drive. its a bit embrassing when changing gear and its revving so high. stopped driving for the moment to sort the problem.

i have heard this will probably be the idle control valve. i have taken the throttle body off and cleaned it but how do i clean the idle control valve, it is part of this throttle body unit isn't it. there are 2 connectors on the left hand side of the throttle body i think one of these is the idle control valve.

how do you clean it because i reckon it full of gunk? or do i have to get a new throttle body?

if i get a second hand throttle body i have to use the ECU off my car don't i?

many thanks for your help in advance.

Jamie :)

The ICV on the 8v models is in the crescent shape of the throttle body when you look at it from above/underneath you'll see what I mean.

I am in the exact same position, revs stick between gear changes and coming to a stop. Butterfly valve is totally cleaned but I want to try to clean ICV but doesnt look like it can come off. There is no way in to clean it without removing it, so i don't understand how anyone has been able to clean it on the mk2 8v?

Read in some other post that it can be pulled out by hitting it away from the tb. Is this true? Or is it definately new tb?

Also what about throttle position sensor?

Its a 2000 1.2 8v mia.

Ah didn't realise you could do that, but cant see how you would tbh. Are you just referring to the butterfly valve that is actuated by the throttle cable?

If not, could someone please give a breif guide as to how to clean in-situ?

It is my understanding that the ICV is the black cylinder on the left of the throttle body with a wiring connector on it? The other black cylinder would be the throttle position sensor potentiometer?

ICV looks similar to this when removed (This is an HGT one):

It slots in the side and goes into the tract area:

The bit at the bottom left, you can see part of the sensor. From above:

Remove throttle body.
Spray with carb cleaner.
Wipe with a cloth.
Get some cotton buds and clean thoroughly.

Thanks so much for the great respose, very helpful. You think this is likely to cure the revs sticking between gearchanges etc thing?

Also any household alternative to carb cleaner that would do the job?

Not that I know of as it has to evaporate quickly, be solvent based and leave no residue.

It may solve the sticky revs issue but I doubt it.

To me it sounds more like a cable issue (is it free moving?) or a throttle position sensor issue. Failing that I'd check for any air leaks - airbox to TB, TB to inlet, inlet to head.

Worth noting if you removed the butterfly to clean it check it's seated properly as it can cause the sticky revs problem you mentioned (been there, done that and gave myself a headache till I figured I was being stupid!).
