Hi

I had an alarming amount of oil in my engine bay and all over the new drive  the other morning.
I found the problem to be the rocker cover gasket had somehow torn and was actually hanging out at the back. No idea how!

So i replaced it as best I could. The burning smell went quite quick and after an oil top up it was fine (engine bay need cleaning now though!)

But after taking my wheel off today I noticed the sump was coated in fresh oil! No idea were its comming from because the rocker cover seams fine around the seal.

(The car had been demoted to the road after spoiling the drive so I dint notice the oil pool on the road so no idea how long its been leaking.)

Any ideas how to find the leak?
Or if there is more to changing the rocker cover than just slipping a new rubber in and i just did it wrong?

Thanks
Chris

there is a guide on here on changing rocker cover, and is the oil leak leaking down the front or the back of the sump?

Ensure the oil breather pipe is on tight and has no splits in it, mine wasnt on tight enough (only had little crappy cable ties to hand when i changed my rocker cover gasket) and it was leaking a little oil down the back of the engine. A little oil goes a long way and looks like alot of oil when its spread over the engine.

Seams to be more on the rear of the sump.

It did have a small split in it when putting it back on. Ill have a look when i get home and get some strong cable ties or something to hold it with.

Going to clean engine bay this week so ill be able to tell if its worked or not once I mange to move all the spilled oil.

Thanks
Chris

Dont use a jetwash, do it manually with a suitable degreasing agent and a paintbrush, then rinse carefully in the same way using water. It takes longer but if you avoid getting water in the ECU, electrical connectors and sensors it will save you a world of pain!

:) Glad to help, its been done so many times and often it doesnt show up until all sorts of connectors start oxidising and throwing up weird faults or poor starting / running which then dont easily get referred back to the cause!

if its at the back of the sump lay under neath the car, (with it on axle stands, not just a jack) and get a torch and see if you can trace the leak back and locate the leak.
EDIT: if you cant locate the leak take pics and upload them on here, well look thro them!
