:bang: HI all, any help would be gratefully appreciated. I have a MK11 punto on a 02 plate. My power steering has stopped working, the city button wont come on either. Any ideas of possible problems or costs?
This car has been a constant money pit, i have had a new ecu, headgasket, water pump, wiper motor, my earths have to be checked all the time as they keep going faulty, and now this, plus i need a new starter motor in the near future.
I love my car when it works, but at the moment im fed up with the piece of cr*p, lol.

Hi Nicola71

I had the same problem on my mk2 w reg punto. You will find sometimes you will get your steering back and then it will go again. You basically have 4 options:

1. Try and sell your car when the power steering comes back on. You can try and get it back by disconnecting your battery.

2. Go to fiat, and they will charge you £530 for a steering column, and fitting, which will cost you approx £900 inc VAT.

3. Buy a re manufactured steering unit from places like ebay, and then get you garage to fit it.

4. Go to a salvage yard and get a steering 'unit' with the motor, ECU etc and expect to pay approx £150 at the salvage yard. Then get your garage to fit it for you. I took this option and its worked for me. BUT, make sure that the salvage yard gives you a 3 month warranty or just walk away and go to another yard.

Before you go to the salvage yard or order a re manufactured steering unit. You need to get the 4 digit number on your steering motor, so you know which one to buy. There are a few different 4 digit numbers, like my steering unit is 6670.

Good luck.

ps. don't ever use your city button. I think that causes damage to the steering unit.

Thanks, i think if i can get it working again i will sell it asap.
Thanks

Well i did it, i sold my car. Looking for a new one now. Anyone got any ideas for my next car?

labour is one hour so dont know where you got £900 from?

Hope you informed new owner of potentially dangerous steering fault!

You mean the potentially dangerous steering fault that FIAT will charge you hundreds to fix unlike BMW who have recalled thousands of cars?

any steering (or braking / suspension etc) related fault can be dangerous. FYI my punto steering has been fine and car is 5 years old and yes I use the city function daily. However according to your link to the daily mail article, and I quote 'have not issued an official recall'

Anyway my point to the OP was I hope they informed the new buyer of the vehicle, nothing to do with BMW or any other company.
