Hi

About 2 weeks ago, as I was driving, I noticed the Warning Light for the Engine Control System Failure appeared on the dashboard.

I continued home as the manual said it was safe to drive, but that I should bring it to a fiat garage to be looked at.

However, the light never came on again and the car appears to be driving normally.

Question is, do I need to bring this to a Fiat Garage or could I ignore it seeing as the light never re appeared.?

Thanks

Just ignore it, and for future you don't need to go to a fiat dealer.

Just go to anyone who has an OBDII Reader, or buy one yourself for £15.

Thanks for the reply.

Just really want to know is it safe to leave it or should I really be getting it looked by someone?

Don't want to discover going at 120mph that it was something serious!!!

Could the fact the light came on once be a sign of somthing major??

It could be a whole host of errors.

Read the code and find out if you're worried.

My guess would be a dodgy lambda reading.

I would have a diagnostic check done on it, better to know rather than worry there is something wrong. You dont have to take it to a fiat dealer though, then will charge a lot more than most garages. Ring round your local garages and find out how much they charge for a diagnostic check, it might save you money.

Incorrect, if its a P1xxx code (which is likely) then you cant read it (some snap-on/mac ones can but cost one heck more than £15!)

You can still read them, if you know someone who's friendly ask them what the code refers to. Yes the OBDII reader you have may just say 'manufacturer specific code' but there are ways to know what the code means. Heck, if you're friendly with Fiat ring them. I have in the past and they've been more than helpful.

Strictly speaking you should pay for access to Fiat tech info the same as a dealer has too however if you know someone then I suppose you are saving money. Personally I only look upon a error code as a 'potential clue'.
