Hiya. . another problem. . :(

Noticed 2 drops of oil on the garage floor this morning, had a look and i cannot decide whether its coming from the rocker cover gasket or not (see pics below)

Its the timing belt end and the timing belt cover is half covered in oil as is the timing belt end of the rocker cover/head.

What do you guys reckon? and how much will it cost to get it fixed? If its just the rocker cover i will do this myself but if not it will be a garage job.

Timing belt cover and alternator belt/pullies

Rocker cover only seems to be 'wet' looking at the timing belt end. Does seep slightly all over but has been like this for a while, no drips.

Thanks in advance

Hi, looks like leaking rocker cover to me,shouldn't be that much for a rocker cover gasket, look in the guides section for punto, THE SULTON has a step by step guide that may help u regarding this matter.;)

Cheers for the reply, my first thought was the rocker cover but im a bit puzzeled as to why the bottom half of the timing cover is 'wet'/oily.

Other posibilities (from what ive researched) are the:

- Camshaft seal - leaking and running down the side of the head (which is inside the timing cover so how does oil get on the outside of it?, unless its coming through the join between the 2 halfs? any ideas? Id of through its would throw oil out everywhere is it was this?)

- Crankshaft seal - throwing oil up onto the timign belt cover, but there is no oil on the bottom of the pulley that i can see, side of the sump is dry.

Im a bit puzzeled.

From what ive seen its quite a labour intensive job todo but the seal itself only costs a few £.

Can i ask what the oil is leaking onto? i.e. just dripping on the floor or is it going up into the engine bay?

the hasnt been any oil drip onto the floor, i know its coming out of my rocker cover, and it went to fiat garage to have that fixed (cause it was about a month after they done my hg) and they told me that my crankshaft oil seal had gone. and that it sprays oil around down there.

Anyone have any insight into my leak? Im puzzeled whther its the rocker/cam cover gasket or something more serious like the camshaft seal or oil pump seal? (if thats what its called)

Leak in picture 2 on the timing belt cover looks to be level (going on pictures on here of cars with the cover removed) with the cambelt tensioner, runnign through the gap between the top and bottom cambelt covers by the engine mount, then running down the outside of the cover cover to the bottom, which is where i believe the oil pump is located (roughly)

Any Help greatly recieved

Shameless bump :S

Anyone have any input,??

Getting desperate now, can get a new rocker cover gasket tomorrow and try that, but i have no torque wrench that goes down low enough (8nm for the bolts)

Right i changed the rocker gasket on monday, it looks sound now and oil tight.

However ive still got a leak dripping one or 2 drops of oil on the floor after the car has been driven. Oil level dont seem to be dropping, i check it every day or so.

Ive been under the car and it looks to be either the sump seal (recently replaced sump so is plausable for there to be a dodgy seal i spose) or the crankshaft oil seal timing belt end.

When i did the rocker gasket the cam belt didnt look oily, (but then again i wasnt payng too much attention to the belt, it was too cold) but i will whip the cover off the weekend and have a proper look at the belt.

Any ideas? Is it plausable that the crankshaft seal has gone?

there is oil running down the cambelt side of the sump and dripping off the bottom. There is a little oil on the suspension behind/under the alternator but im guessing its been blown backwards when the car is running.

Any help?

if it is crankshaft seal how much am i looking at for it to be replaced?

Thanks

Anyone?

There is no oil on the cambelt, i took the cover off last weekend to check it. So can i rule out crankshaft oil seal?

Its deffinately engine oil, can tell by the small, but the oil level hasnt dropped by any noticeable ammount within the last 200 miles.

I park in a gareg at night so thats maybe why i notice the leak, even though it is only 1-2 drops.

Hi there, i am having exactly the same problem with my putno, i was told at a garage that the rear oil crankshaft seal had gone. its only dripping a little bit but was the told it was the labour which was gonna cost the money.

did u get urs sorted mate or do you know where you can just buy the seal so i can have a go at fixing it my self.

any help appreciated

My car is still leaking a little bit, it drips off the bottom of the sump now, and there is another little leak gearbox end dripping onto the exhaust but i thinks thats down to the sump seal and nothing more serious.

Im hoping mine will be ok until a month or so when i trade it in for a new car.

Hi Mdeko,

Ive had this headache and it was driving me mad, from what you've said it sounds the same, mine wud'nt leak when cold only after a journey, the problem? when I replaced the rocker cover gasket I did'nt use/enough RTV gasket sealent, what I did in the end because it drove me mad was take it all off again, wash the gasket in hot soapy water and dry that, clean the head were the gasket meets (try and get rid of any bumps/bits of dirt on there, and on the inside rim of the rocker cover wipe any oil out so its clean. when putting it back 2geather, apply liquid gasket all around the top of engine were the gasket meets and on the rocker cover apply it in the rim all around then press the gasket back into the rim, and put it back on the engine, tighten up the bolts and leave them fingers crossed (oh and pray that helps lol) thats how I fixed mine and so far(2weeks) it has'nt leaked:D

hope that might be of some use.

Yeah i think the gasket around the top of my sump has gone, the oil is gushing out of it now so i bought some rubber gasket maker stuff from halfords.
Haynes says I have to take off the manifold in order to remove the sump? Is this true? It seems too much effort lol

Hi Nbrnay,

That's what my manual say's too, But my dad suggested if I used a long reach socket set and be patience, It should come off without removing the exhust manifold? allthough it might be tricky. Hav'nt done mine because it was the rocker gasket dripping down.

Gl :)

Its very hard todo it with the mainfold still connected. You have to manovre it round the oil pickup to get it off, then when its covered in sealer getting it back without catching any of the sealer is difficult to do. Its simplier to remove the manifold (only 8 bolts plus the heatshield bolts) get a new manifold gasket and your away.
