Hi, I have a Punto 1.2 16v Sporting that I am having problems with. At certain times when I accelerate, the car suddenly holds back as if you had hit a rev limiter, & the car has no power. I have noticed it does it more often when I go to overtake or set off from a junction, if I drive the car accelerating slowly it is less frequent. When this happens & then you have to stop at a junction, when you set off the car appears to misfire & has poor acceleration. The car can sometimes go for days with out it happening or sometimes it will happen every journey.
When I carry out a diagnostic check the code P0220 Throttle/pedal position sensor/switch B circuit malfunction is stored, if I clear the fault then it happens again this same code appears. I have managed to get the fault to appear by flicking the accelerator pedal, I have tried removing the plugs & re fitting & wriggling the connections on the accelerator potentiometer & the throttle body but the fault does not appear, I am reluctant to buy a throttle pedal potentiometer to find this is not the fault, knowing wiring connection problems are an issue, has anyone any ideas or experienced this fault before?

hi, ive just checked your trouble code up on Autodata. and all it says about the code is

Fault Location: Throttle position (TP) sensor B/accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor B - circuit malfunction

Probable Cause: Wiring, TP/APP sensor, ECM

Fault 2: Fault Location: Throttle position (TP) switch B/accelerator pedal position (APP) switch B - circuit malfunction

Probable Cause 2: Wiring, TP switch, APP switch, ECM

hope this helps u in anyway

Find a mechanic with access to a fault reader to plug into ur ECU (when the engine warning light comes on the ecu stores this problem(s) as a code so they can be read to narrow the problem to a specific location). If they cant read the code (some codes cannot be read) then ull have to take it to fiat for them to read. Is the car limping?

As regards to ur problem steve ive never come across this before so cant really help u on this one.....but i like ur methods of trying to pinpoint it. Hope u suss it

Thanks for the replies guys, I haven't had chance yet to play about with any more, if & when I find the fault I will post my findiings. (y)

Hi all, said I would let you know in case any of you had a similar problem. I found that the wiring loom to the throttle pedal had been twisted round several times & then plugged into the throttle pedal, this had fractured one of the conductors inside the insulation on one of the cables & vibration or movement must have caused a intermittent make & break. I dont know why it was like this I suspect that someone had messed about with it in the past. I repaired the broken wire & all has been well since.

For you, congratulations on the forum. I have a PUNTO (188) 1.2 16v and showed me the error OBD P0220, the damage is permanent and throttle working from 1/2 onwards. Opening the throttle 24 degrees when I press an end.
I'd like the help you on whether to blame the APP or TP or wiring
Thanks in advance
