hi my Punto 55s just failed its MOT on a few bits 1 of the things is a (Nearside Front Track Rod End Ball Joint) is this hard to replace as the welding it needs is £140 worth and i really dont want to spend out any more if any one could help me out would help me alot thank you.:)

why wouls it need welding, I replaced both of mine in about 20 minutes. it just screws on the same amount of turns it came off as but you should your tracking sorted after anyway. have you not got a haynes manual? Thats what I used.

na the welding is the outher part of the MOT ok thank you ill have to get one

as jay said, track-rod end's are a doddle to change, take the wheen off, and you will see the track-rod end, just releace it from the hub, and then un-wind it, just remember the amount of turns you done, MAKE SURE BEFORE FITTING that you clean up the thread on the tie-bar (where the track rod end is fitted to)
then once completed, get the tracking done!

you have a tollerence of 1 degree, either toe in or toe out, i set mine as 0 degrees which was spot on

I'm going to be replacing one of these tomorrow after an MOT fail - in the Haynes manual it says you need a special tool (a joint splitter or something). Is this necessary, or is there a way round it?

Thanks!

You'll need a ball joint splitter to enable removal of the TRE from the hub. You may aswell by the cheaper fork-type one as these have a propensity to ruin the rubber gaiter that covers the ball joint but that doesn't matter as you are replacing the joint.

Get one from Halfords (or pretty much any other motor factors TBH) for about a fiver.
