Hi Folks,

Hopefuly somebody can assist, I took my punto into the garage today as the engine management light has been on for a couple days. The car randomly would start fine, other times it would "misfire" and run on 2 cyclinders aparently. Recently its been more misfiring rather than fine.

The garage has told me that the engine coils need replaced (originaly it was an engine coil, then it was engine coils) and also the ecu is knackerd too. So they are ready to charge me in excess of £450 for this work to be carried out.

Does this sound accurate? Being absolutely clueless about cars i'd like a second opinion. Anyone with similar experiences?

Thansk for any help!
Mark

Each pair of cylinders fires simultaneously, but it requires a complete circuit of 2 plugs, 2 good leads and 1 coil. I think the coil is part of a dual pack in that car.
Obviously the plugs is the first thing to check along with the leads.
Replacement coil is next.
After this is done thats the time to look at the ecu, it can go wrong, but generally its reliable.
It will not harm anything if you put new coils onto a faulty ecu for testing.
Tony.

Hi I had a similar problem with my 2001 Fiat Punto Mia. The Engine Control System came on about beginning of December, took it to the garage and they diagnosed it with Ignition Coils. Naturally they were replaced and cost me £130 for replacing 2 Ignition coils and labour. Then the next day the light came back on and the garage diagnosed it again, came up with the same answer - Ignition Coils.

The garage then fitted spark plugs but the light have been on since then. To be honest the car is working fine, but sometimes a big jerky when starting up the ignition.

From the other forums I read, the ecu stores the fault?

Puntolady- Could be the ecu needs to re-learn the settings.
Do :-
During test dont let car drop under 1300 rpm

Rev to 5000 for a few secs, then drop to 1300.
repeat 4 times.

Must be that time of year! Mine did exactly the same last week. I took mine to a garage & the mech said it was the coil, which he replaced. Then he said it wasnt and took it off again & said it was the ECU.

Given that he too quoted £420 for the ECU & fitting I had a look on Ebay. There are a lot of companies offering rebuilds or new units (which dont need coding - plug n play) for a lot less.

This was the one I bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fiat-Punto-1-...3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:2|39:1|240:1318

Looking at the ECU - it seems easy enough to install, but I also bought two coils as a package deal as I dont want to run the risk of damage to the new ecu by what might be a faulty coil.

My question for these fine forum members will be how difficult is it to fit the coils? Time isnt an issue & I have every tool imaginable!!

on my punto there is 8 4mm bolts holding mine on i seam to be getting the same code come up on mine so i think my ecu has packed up.one question does the ecu have to be programed to my car ??

Well it seems my Punto needs a new ECU Unit. The garage quoted £300 inc labour! As I dont have the actual model number yet, is that reasonable and would the Fiat garage charge cheaper or more? All so rubbish.

before you get a new coil its worth fitting a new set of HT leads. i had a similar problem last month where i suddenly got a misfire in the middle of a motorway trip. i took it to a garage next day who said the coil was on its way out but i couldn't afford it at the time so i took the car home. i had a chin wag with my old man who said that if it was the coil it would be a constant problem not intermitant. so i fitted a new set of HT lead and it workes fine again. Sometimes the HT leads break at the end where you plug them on (especially if the spark plugs get changed when the cars been running not long beforehand) which causes the random misfires

Rubbish as in not expecting the costs :( But like you said cars are expensive to maintain.

Hiya thanks for the advice, I shall tempt that one day!

I will be picking up the car today, and they told me to look out a for a few things in the next 12 months.

The head gasket and the exhaust.

I was wondering how much does the head gasket would cost to replace? From all this forum it seems to varies.

Much appreciated.

hi to all i have been reading this thread as a quest for a while and have been interested as my daughters punto has been throwing up the same error intermittently for a few weeks we have changed all the plugs leads and coils and have now had to getan ECU from e-bay to rectify the problem of mis-firing and stalling ..my question is will we have to get the said ecu programmed or altered to make it work her car or is it plug and play ?? any help would be great ....also i miss dissy caps and points ..lol..:):)

you dont give enough info
theres differentt ecus fitted and some are virginesed for ever some only work on the car you fit it to so its virginised for a one fit pony
give a more a details

Having some misfiring problems with my Punto MK2 Sporting Year 2000 16V - tried new spark plugs and leads, during the changing of the leads one of the ports on the Coil Pack cracked, so just got a new coil pack which I will fit next week when the weather isn't so cold.

But I was wondering if it comes down to having to buy a new ECU do you have to get the same model that came with your car or can you get one that is newer?

I ask because my car is from the Year 2000 and OBD2 didn't seem to become standard until 2001 - so virtually none of the Android Apps for reading OBD2 data will work with my car using my Bluetooth OBD2 Dongle.
