General steering wheel wobble

took my steering wheel of today after one of the wires on my stalk gone loose.. after fixing the wire i put the wheel back on, but now the wheel seems loose as in it pulls towards me and back down about 1cm...

i have tightened the large center nut as much as it will go but the wheel still seems loose...

obviously not enough, try an over sized socket to hammer down the wheel

the nut has been tightened enough, if i were to tighten it any more it would break.... the wheel only seems to pull and push when the wheel is straight, when i turn the wheel anyway it doesn't pull/push at all...

i think it has something to do with the space between the wheel and the stalk, as i see it slide back and forth....

just gone and checked it again and i dont think it is the nut causing the problem.. it seems to be something else behind the wheel, but i dont know what...

are we talking mk1? its very particulat it has to be put together exactly as it was and should go straight down, take it off again and take as may moving parts are you can off it, the hazard light switch is a swine and also the stalk can be put on upside down, as you know it fits perfectly on a splined type thing so if you can see make sure its goin all the way to the bottom.

the stalk is the right way up. i think everything is on right but as you said i may have missed something out or put something back on wrong...

i may have to just remove it again tomorrow and have another go at putting it back on..
