Hi all,

Has anybody fitted a new sump on an 1.2 16v 2003 punto before?

Found a pool of oil the other day a was gobsmacked to see oil seeping through what was left of the sump.

Milelage is 80,000 but being an 03 plate thought it should have held up better, i've picked up a new sump for it but can't believe what i've been qouted by a couple of local garages, cheapest so far is £200.00

It looks the sump is bolted onto the block by about 14 10mm bolts, been told to use a silicone sealant as well, can anyone offer any advice ?

Cheers

Cheers for the advice, i've got a tube of sikaflex sealant at the mo will this hold up to the temperature?

Will it need a fresh oil and a new oil filter when the sump is changed over as a new one was fitted about a month ago?

Not sure what the selant dave is reffering to, it may well do the job.

I always use the Fiat black sealer. Clean the surfaces up properly, don't use too much sealer and check the oil pickup is clean. The bottom end should be kept wrapped up and away from any dust/dirt while you do the job.

I'd put fresh oil in.

Cheers Jon,

I tried a few spares shops and a couple of breakers yards but no joy, all saying that it was a main dealer part, plenty of 8v around but no 16v sumps.

My local dealership have qouted £320.00 !! for part and labour. I end up paying £102.00 for it.

Gonna pick up some decent sealent as advised above then give it a bash tomorrow.
Did you fit yours, if so was it a pain in the arse?

From looking at a few of the other threads on here it seems as though the 8v sump involves the flywheel and exhaust, is this the case with my 1.2 16v MK2b 03 ? It looks as though my sump is just bolted on with a sealant in place of a gasket, if anyone knows how to correctly fit it i'd really appreciate any info.

Cheers Again
Martin,

They're not a pain in the arse IMO, easy job to do.

I would imagine the exhaust manifold has to come off too as it runs in the same position. Not sure about the flywheel cover on the sporting unortunately.

Clean both surfaces up, remove all excess sealant off the block. Ensure the block and oil pickup are clean. Apply the sealant to the sump in a constant bead all the way round a few mm wide. Leave for 30-45 seconds to go off a little bit (I use Fiat black sealer, instructions may differ for other brands).

In one movement fit the sump in the correct position and pop a couple of bolts in place. Try not to move it around as the seal will be poorer and you risk getting excess sealant into the sump (not what you want!). Tighten up all the bolts in opposites till nip tight. Go round again and do them up properly. Wipe off any excess silicone which seeps out.

Leave for a few hours (I never have but if I had the time I would) and re-fill the oil etc.
