Exclamation Punto Van 1.3 TD Multijet - Check engine light

Having problems with a Fiat Punto van (1.3 TD Multijet)

The "check engine" light comes on at somewhere around maximum boost and it goes into limp mode.

The fault code read reports error P0238 (Air supply circuit - Turbocharger Boost Sensor A Circuit High), which FIAT said could be due to either a faulty MAP sensor or air flow meter.

The MAP sensor has been replaced and hasn't fixed the problem. And the air flow meter has been disconnected, which didn't fix the problem either. NEither my local garage or FIAT dealership can offer any further practical advice (FIAT will look at it for 80 per hour with no guarantees of fixing the problem )

After a few restarts the fault clears, but as soon as I put my foot down and van hits around 3,000 rpm, the light comes on and I have to limp home.

Anybody got any ideas?

Re: Punto Van 1.3 TD Multijet - Check engine light

I have the same problem with my grande punto (1.9 Multijet). My local fiat dealer could not say what the problem is and has no idea what the failure code P0238 means.
The problem with the lamp for engine control starts at 3,500 rpm.
I will try to get some more information from other fiat dealers.
Sorry for the bad english...

I am having the same problem on my 1.3 mjet grande punto. I started a thread on this in the Grande Punto section. ... Sounds as though mine is just a sensor of some kind but like you, I am not keen for Fiat to look at this for 80 per hour!

had the same problem on my diesel panda .. its the waste gate seized on the back of the turbo cos at around 3000rpm its should start to open but when its seized closed the pressure gets too high and the sensor lets you know at the same time putting the engine in to limp home mode .It will reset on start up but will trip again at 3000 rpm

That makes sense.

The fact its coming up with the sensor 'fault' doesn't mean the sensor is faulty, only that its seeing something it doesn't like.

I have seen similar readings when an induction pipe collapses from the vacuum at higher levels of boost, cutting off the air supply when the engine wants more.

Its one of the problems of using a reader rather than Examiner or Examiner clone. Don't know what the map sensor cost, but it must surely have gone a long way towards having the car read properly. The proper machines can ping the individual component and check its working correctly, or not.

Some local autosparks have Examiner clones which can do the job for less than 80.

Cheers

Re: Punto Van 1.3 TD Multijet - Check engine light

to the guy asking about 1,5 bars and up! >> the map sensor on the 70-75hp moddel is located at the back of the intake manifold look up my video "HDI boost controler fiat panda" youtube.! it is a 2,5bar sensor and that meens the sensor cant read more than 1,5 in boost.. the 90model on the otherhand is a 3.0bars sensor and will read to 2,0 in boost but it dosent fit directly on the 70hp model intake!

This was exactly my problem too, 400 miles out of warranty, I needed a new turbo, there are several problems ranging from a dirty sensor to a knackered turbo, fingers crossed yours is the cheaper option!
