have to meaure the valve clearance soon on a 53 plate 1.2 8v engine, do they usuually go out of spec much? are they just a shim and bucket and do you need to remove the cam to get them out?

sam

no they very rarely go out of sise made out of extremely hard metal

engine has to have been very very hot or had bad oil circulation for a very very long time

they are indeed simple shim and bucket

more often the lose they actually close up and hold valves open so that's all you need to check for really

always remember a rattly tappet is a happy tappet a tight tappet will burn out a valve

you can remove replace them without removing the camshaft using a wedge to push open the valve and then a piece of metal in between the cam and edge of the bucket to hold it open then flick the tappet out obviously without proper fiat tols you wil have to improvise

you can do this on top dead also as it's a non interference engine

i assume you have the correct tappet clearances too hand or you would have asked

also be sure to replace the rocker cover gasket wile your in there or it will leak after you have disturbed it there only meant to last 24k miles or 2 years hence why fiat service says check tappets every 2 years or 24k

also use a little silicone glue in the corners of the gasket were it takes a sharp turn to go over the cam shaft caps at either end or it will leak here

there is a guide in the punto guides section with pictures showing were to put the glue that i made

thanks again for this reply. i know what you mean about the gasket leaking, mine is leaking at the end of the cam over the coil pack. i should be able to get fiat tools, im a tech at a ford dealer ship, our other dealer in cambridge also does fiat so they could send it over. know tons about fords but never done anything to my punto

have the auto data program at work and it says the specs, just not how to do it

o i bet you've adjusted many a ford fiesta with push rod engine them things seem to start rattling once a month the wear that's taking place somewhere to cause that is tremendous

the old 1.3 hcs engine, nick names the rattler, my partner has a hcs in ther ka, its such a simple engine to work on, and its pretty much bullet proof, you can run them with hardly any oil in them and they still go

well went to do my valve clearances this morning, drove to work, around 2 miles, serviced my car for an hour etc, took the rocker cover off and the engine and cam was still hot, not roasting hot but hurt you hand if you left it on the cam for about 10 seconds, im going to have to do it at home in the morning before its started. another thing for my list of bad things, others being my spark plugs were wrong and that i got a pollen filter when my car does not even have one. engine is abit quiter with new oil though lol

well yea doing em cold is a good idea

pollen filter is yours a mk2

if so you can buy a lid and 2 screws then cut out the hole in the heater under the passengers side foot well and fit the pollen filter to one that don't have one i'm guessing just the lid and a couple of screws for that would be peanuts

make sure you put some coper slip on the bolts going into the head for the rocker cover as after a few years they can stick and then snap off as you undo them

i have actually checked tappets hot on an engine at work before and there was only about 2 thou difference over stone cold

out of intrest what kind of oil you use in your car

i thought since it only had a small drive then sat for an hour it would be ok, but yea it wasnt lol

goold idea about the pollen filter, yea mine is a mark to, i think next time i service it i will do what you said, i could see where its ment to be fitted its just blanked off.

i use 10w40 oil, its some ford stuff i got from work
