I have an '02 Mk2 Punto but I'm having trouble fitting new speakers in the two front doors. The factory ones cut out occasionally on either side and I figured that if I got new ones along with a new headunit then the quality would almost certainly be better as well. The problem is that although it looks like after undoing a couple of screws the speaker cover in the door should just slide off, it didn't. Even after undoing every screw visible that was attaching the plastic fitting on the door to the door the thing still wouldn't budge.
I went to Halfords, which I know aren't the best but i figured that they would be able to succeed where I had failed and set up the new speakers to the headunit all in the price of the fitting. However, after the kid looked in 'the book' he said that the punto would need new front speaker adaptors which would cost an extra £70, which was more than the price of the speakers that I wanted . He said that the reason for it was most probably because the speakers in there were an odd size and so for normal 10, 16.5, 17cm etc speakers to fit you would need an adaptor. Looking in the manual reveals that the ones already fitted are 165mm, which is a size they make plenty of speakers in.
Is it impossible to fit new door speakers without an adaptor and if its not then how did you manage to do it? Sorry about all the words.:yum:

when u say adapter what exactly is it for the head unit... normally when u buy a aftermarket stereo they require whats called a ISO adapter. this changed the wireing for certain cars. this you will definatly need. to wire the speakers it shouldnt need a spacer or anythin because of the speaker size.

if you need a adapter to connect the speakers try maplin electronics.. u might be able to get a similar adapter to plug over then original to fit your speakers. (shouldn't really do this but u can buy from halfords female spade connectors for wireing speakers. u could cut existing wires an fit a junction block. then attach more wire with the spade fittings to fit back of the speaker.)

heres how i done mine,
carefully prise off the cover. (i labelled in red blobs where the locking pins are, there are clips all around it tho.
then i undone three standard screws, the old speaker cam out with a clip going into the back. i then identified the +ve and -ve put on new connectors and plugged it into my new speaker.
screwed it in place and wired it to headunit. All i bought to do this was Fli integrator 6.5".i didnt need any extras to fit them.
Matt.

Cheers Matt, the cover popped off just like you said. It looks like any new speakers should just fit in easily. I don't know if the adaptor was just Halfords trying to make some extra cash or what.

After pulling out the factory speakers they were attached with a yellow connector incorporating two spade connectors of the same size. The wire going into the '1' part of the yellow connector was pink and black and the wire going into the '2' part was black and purple. The spade connectors on both of these were the same, larger size. How can I tell which is the positive wire and should attach to the larger male spade on my new speaker and which is the negative wire which should attach to the smaller one on the new speaker?
Hope this makes sense, if not I'll try to explain it further.

the easiest way is to turn on your system quietly and try them both ways one way will sound clearer that is the correct way they should go.

There's an adapter for that. However, the driver side in mine had two plugs attachted to the speaker, one yellow and one red, with different keying.

Does someone know what the red plug is for?

Out of interest, my driver's side door speakers often cut out - I assume it's because that's the door that gets opened and shut the most often.

Does anyone know the most likely source of the problem and how to fix it?

Is it likely to be a broken or loose wire at a certain spot?
