My Windscreen wipers on my Mk1 punto have a mind of their own,

Its clicked down right to the bottom to stop them and click once up and they go fast, next click up and they are on intermitent but only go half way up the Winscreen.

Its getting annoying and i think it may fail the MOT as they arnt working probally and its due on Wednesday Grrr.

Is it possible the Relay or the switch itself?? or even both, I understand the relay is next the the motor and linkage but the stalk doesnt seam to come off looks like a steering wheel out job.

Please someone help me

Cheers

Adam

Hi - sorry, could you just describe the problem a little further please... I'm not quite understanding... (I think the problem is with the self-parking contact in the motor assembly - you could take it apart and clean it)

0 ... with the lever at the top, the wipers should be OFF.
1 ... when you move the lever down one click, shouldn't the wipers start on intermittent?
2 ... when you move the lever down two clicks, shouldn't the wipers go continuously?
3 ... when you move the lever down three clicks, shouldn't the wipers be continuous at high speed?
.... when you move the lever up to the top (0), the wipers should continue to the parked position, then stop.

So, re-reading your post - I'm not clear on whether the wipers are parking correctly or even whether the positions of the switch are correct.

When you say that they only go half way up on intermittent, that makes me think that as the intermittent pulse finishes, the wipers are supposed to continue to the park position and then stop until the next pulse. Yours is not, therefore your self-parking is not working. But you didn't mention this. And the operation of the lever seems upside-down - it's usually down for higher speeds.

If it is the self-parking at fault, then remove the wiper motor and unbolt the flat metal cover - you should find inside a plastic gear with brass switch contacts (may need to remove the gear as well). Clean the contacts with metal polish or even something like toothpaste and a toothbrush... This is the most likely cause of the self-parking not to work. The intermittent timer relay is incorporated into the motor circuit board.

Then again if the operation of the lever is all up the creek as well, maybe you have a switch problem - and as you said, it's steering-wheel-off to fix that one. If there is an airbag (some Mk1 Puntos do have them, but perhaps only for Japan and therefore 2nd-hand in NZ), disconnect the battery a couple of hours before you unplug the airbag.

Perhaps at the bottom position (high speed) you actually have the wipers stopped (as you describe) because of a fault in the motor, a fault in the switch, or even because someone has substituted a motor that doesn't have the high-speed function - have they ever worked at high speed when you've had the car?

Incidentally, if the wipers go continuously when switched to position 2 or 3, I think that would be an MOT pass (but I'm not sure). I doubt there is a requirement to have an intermittent wipe facility, nor is there a requirement for self-parking...?

Cheers,
-Alex

Right, Basically i have changed the Motor and arm and its alot better all the speeds are correct and working how they should using the wiper stalk. But still got problem with the wipers parking when you switch them off.

So they are half way up the windscreen.

Shall i try cleaning the motor?

Cheers
