just noticed on a road trip the other day, when driving in a straight line, i have a few degrees of slack play in the steering wheel - its a pain over long distances :(

is this normal? my mk1 did as well, but i hadnt noticed on the mk2 untill now.

if not, how do i fix it?

hmm, it was fine today. maybe its just scotland's rubbish roads :chin:

Could be!

Have the wheel alignment (tracking) checked. If you have lots of toe-out or toe-in, you get a vague feeling in the steering as it wants to 'ride' on either wheel that's pointing forwards. Also the tyres chew out - inside edge of tread for toe-out, outside edge for toe-in.

Also, different makes of tyres have different response characteristics. At least make sure that the tyre pressures are correct, and possibly replace tyres if they are in dubious condition.

If you actually have slack in the steering, that will manifest itself as a knocking noise or feel. I would guess that track-rod end balljoints would be a good place to start checking.
