On one of the rear doors on my mk1 punto, when opened from the outside, the handle sticks out after it has been pulled. so the door wont close when you shut it. you have to push the handle back down first and the close it.

does anyone know how to fix it?

is tried getting a bit of WD40 on it from the outside but that didnt work

I have the same problem on my front door. There is no point in removing the door card and trying to spray the lock with lubricant - this is what I did to no avail. I guess I will have to remove the complete lock assembly and see what the trouble is (broken/misfit spring?)

I know this is not exactly helpful, but hopefully it can save you some time

Wow that's a bit surreal, was just browsing and my driver door is doing exactly the same thing. Gave it a good blast of WD40 and it improved it a little - the handle goes back down now, but it still doen'st click closed properly.

Any advice much appreciated, it's a really annoying little niggle! :bang:

haha a little too late (CZ)enda, did that already and no improvement like you!

it is a very annoying problem as you have to instruct everyone how to close your car door! :bang:

so has anyone had this problem and managed to solve it?
any help would be greatly appreciated

I guess that makes five of us :D

Right front and left rear door got the symptom. I'll make sure to come back with a cure if I 'm able to work it out.

ooo were getting a nice little group of us now!

i wonder why no one else has had this problem before ::confused:

so if any one finds the answer, please post the solution!!!!

I don't have this problem, but I do have an oil leak. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :)

The door handle is connected to the door lock by a rod, so if the handle is sticking it's more likely to be that the door lock is not returning to it's normal disengaged position, so it's leaving the handle poking out.

If you remove the door card you can unbolt the door lock from the door - it's held in with 2 or 3 screws.

Don't disconnect the lock from the rod to the handle as the rod is a barsteward to refit) .. but get some WD40 or teflon based lubricant and spray it into the lock pivots and work it in.

Once it's nice and lubed, you can finish off with some LM grease. Work it right into the moving pivots. Refit the lock to the door and that should be that.

Well it appears my daughter's Punto isn't the only one to have this problem. I've tried to remove the doorcard but am unable to remove the window winder. Any suggestions please? Haynes assumes that you have electric windows all round.

its a right arse to do. There is a little metal clip that holds the winder on. You have to get behind the winder and flick/push it off with something small and thin. Ones youve done that it should just pull off.

I had a similar problem with a VW Passat. The handle would lift, but its built in return spring couldn't pull it back down. It was caused by corrosion in the door handle pivots - probably salt from last winter eating into it.

WD40 from outside solved the floppy door handle, great!!!

But inner door handle still wont open the door. Tried turning the child lock and still no joy. Mmh. Looks like I'm going to have to take the doorcard off. Blast, was hoping not to have to do that.

The OP did say "Sticky Door handle"

If its now floppy, a linkage has separated or broken inside the door. Too much force on an immovable object is never a good idea.

My door also does this ! Tried WD40 but no luck. Anyone found a solution yet?

Can I just point out something important about the wonder spray WD40. It does work to free up stiff parts and lubricates them BUT only temporarily! For long lasting lubrication you must use a spray grease or gun oil. WD40 can be removed easily when you wash your car with detergent, spray grease and gun oil won't be. Release with WD by all means but treat it straight after with longer lasting lubricant. As regards to sticky door handles, the problem usually resides with the door catch and pin. Make sure they are lined up or the catch may not spring hard enough to pull the handle in. Gun oil is brilliant for door catches, grease for door hinges and handle bolt arm joints.

PS. Its salt water off the winter roads that causes the problem by drying the joint and allowing dirt and grit in. Even if the door is working fine, a regular spray of grease or drop of oil will keep them working for the life of the car.

If door handle works but sticky as said give it a good working of something like wd40 or i prefer duck oil, then stand there like a lemon for 10 minutes pulling up and down on the handle
when it frees off do as Dcthebear says and give it a dose of proper oil from a can i use the tin mans oil can when dorothy isnt looking with fresh engine oil in it
if after 10 minutes it still sticks then its goosed and needs replacing
