any good ideas ppl ??? i got a 1.2 8v so i need to no wats best to get.... wud like to get beta sound from the car and better performance... all info will be appriciated .... thnx (y)

HGT engine? Why recreate the wheel when a bigger BHP from factory engine is available to you. As said though it would be better to sell up and put the money towards a better car as insuring a conversion can cause problems and unfortunatly will effect the value of the car overall as it wouldnt be a true HGT.

Top of my head, the mods that are "not too challenging" are:

- GSR type induction Kit
- Propper exhaust...Not some HUGE chavvy bean can diameter one - It has to keep the backpressure up whilst still making it easier for exhaust gases to exit the system.
- Camshaft from punto 75 engine
- Getting rid of excess weight (spare tyre/jack/wheelbrace/seats) etc if your daring

- DONT put 18"/17" even 16" alloys on as they put the engine under more strain (heavier wheels)

- Lightened flywheel (if you can be bothered, which many cant, makes engine rev more freely, but be careful on the hills!)

- Bigger Bored Throttle body, I think punto 75 ones fit, not sure though.

- Service your engine properly (you'd be suprised of the difference)

- Tightening the accelerator cable (perks things up a bit)

- install a Jap Twin Turbo V6 from a supra (self explanatory)

But yeah seriously. If you can get your hands on a Mk1 or Mk2 Punto sporting, your laughing.

If I recall, Mk1 punto sporting 1.2 16, 0-60 = 10ish seconds
Mk1/Mk2 1.2 8v, 0 -60 = 14ish seconds

0 - 60 in 10 will hold it's own against the average car on the road, (bigger cars)

You need to spend a lot for little gains on this engine. I have mk1 8v, with 40mm tb, gsr induction, supersprint exhaust and crich chip. Add it all up and this probably cost around 300.

If you did all that and still wanted more, you could switch to a MPI head, but thats not quite as easy as the above bolt ons.

Don't expect it to be a road rocket after mods like this, you will notice a difference but the gains are small.

You probably have your reasons for not wanting to sell up and buy something quicker, which is fair enough. I know I didn't sell up 'cos I could have never have afforded 1.2 16v insurance.

So instead, I did a few mods and learnt a lot of stuff from doing it, and if that's what you are interested in then go for it (y)

Deposit on a fast car. Don't p**s money away tuning a shopping cart.

I guess the 1.4 16v must be a bit of a hot rod then, not a cheap italian town run about  :p

i have to say, selling up and buying a sporting would be the best option, now a 1.2 8v mk2 has got to be worth 1k, maybe even 1500 if not more? you can pick up a OK hgt for as little as £1400 on ebay, or mint fsh models going for £1800, a sporting is similar if not more money.

i would seriously concider selling up and getting a bigger engine, as said, £500 will get you an extra 10bhp ish, when you could sell up and buy a hgt, with 130bhp or a sporting with 80bhp, and if you think u cant get a higher spec cos of insurance, get a quote on yours with a induction and remap, bet its higher than a sporting.

Compared to a 1.2 8v its a ferarri. And after some basic (cheap) mods its in HGT territory.

For some reason this seems necessary always wanted one for my 55!

nana like my car i got so if u got nothin decent to say then keep it to yaself

Oi, we're just offering advice ;)

Honestly you'd be better off saving your money for a bit and getting a 1.2 16v mk2 (if your heart is set on a mk2) . same size (1242cc) engine but it kicks out 20 extra horses over the 1.2 8v. Or wait slightly longer and get a 1.4 16v. both are much better engines (which I say from experience of driving them)

And by the way, the 8v is a REALLY old engine. It was fitted in the old fiat uno's and mk1 puntos. Late 70's or early 80's it was designed in I think (if memory serves).

Tbf you want an actual fast car then you'll spend a lot, even the 1.2 and 1.4 16v engines are more adequate, than tarmac-meltingly fast, For example my 1.2 16v would just win a 0-60 drag race with my dads 1.6 focus ghia (the 115 bhp one tbf) but that does not make it a fast car, it will be faster than the 8v but in standard tune not exactly a rocket ship so you'd probably have to tune the engine once it was fitted.

iv looked into gettin a 1.2 16v sporting.... i think that wud be my best choice i test drove one yesterday an i like it lol (y)

good choice.

Like steveRB45 said, it's no jet fighter, but it'll have a bit more headroom for mods etc.

Mine's a 5 door dynamic with the same engine (5 speed gearbox) and it does shift (y) and surprisingly quick from 70-100 too! (scarily quick rather IMO)

And by the way, the MPG wont be as good as the 8v, I'm only seeing 37-40 (41 if i'm lucky on the m-way). Could the cold weather be affecting this d'you reckon?

Btw, would adding in a 6 speed gearbox make much difference?
