Hi, i've got a 2002 Punto Sporting mk2. I got a Fiat CD/MP3 stereo from a mk3 punto, but when i fitted it, it only displays 'CANCHECK' and i can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to bypass this or force it to work? It looks like its not speaking to the engine computer! Failing that i'll have to sell it.

Hi,

What model is the radio you took out, it should say on the side Blaupunkt LOW, MID , HIGH etc?

Look at the back of both radios. See what connections you have.

On my radio Blaupunkt mid there is a mini ISO connection ( a little yellow plug) that plugs in above the larger power and speaker connections.

This connector, on my radio, lets the radio and the body computer check the code. My radio does not work if this connector is unplugged and displays the same message.

Is this any help?

good luck!

i noticed on a pdi the other day that facelift puntos dont have the extra conector (or atleast that one didnt) with can high and low conections.
try conecting the radio using just the two standard iso conectors and not the extra one, it worked for me and that unit was a cd/mp3 one.

Hello! I had the same trouble with my radio. I got in touch with fiat and they said it was because I was fitting a radio that is better than the one originally fitted. Therefore it wouldnt work. I tried everything, gave up in the end and bought just a totally different radio (not a fiat / blaukpunkt one) and voila! Works!

Hi, its a Blaupunkt MID that i've taken out. The little plug has the connections for CAN L and CAN H. If i don't plug this into the old MID stereo, that one just displays 'Check'

The new CD/MP3 stereo doesn't have CAN L and CAN H, but does have CAN A and CAN B. I tried connecting the H an L lines to the A and B in the new one, both ways, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know if they can be modified to not use the cancheck thing? I like the idea of using the standard Fiat stereo rather than a standard one with a facia adaptor.

I gave up in the end as it drove me crazy (even more crazy than I am already hehe) and got one and used the facia. I like the blaupunkt one better, just cos it looked nicer. :D keep me posted how you get on. Thanks

Hi

I have X-Reg Fiat Punto 1.2 which has Blaupunkt LOW system in it currently. I simply want to upgrade this to a Blaupunkt MID system. However I also get the message "check" on the display when I plug it in.

I have contacted about 15 different dealers across the country who either didnt know how to help or simply wouldnt want to help let alone know what was wrong. Many dealers incorrectly refered me to their local "audio specialists" who would also not have any knowlege because its a Fiat OE radio!

Obviously again, its something to do with this CAN business but im not making a major upgrade as the mid has come from another mk2 punto.

Would anyone know how to fix this problem? If not I guess I could sell it for as much as I bought it for on ebay, but isnt that just condemning another poor soul to the same problem?

WE tryed to swop over the radio/cd from a 03 punto to a 04 punto and found the can network wires were in differant locations in the multiplugs and we also tryed to rewire the can system to activate the unit but found that the body computor hold the security codes and will not allow another unit to work so we concluded along with Fiat that either use factory supplied radio cass and add a auto changer or fit a non Fiat unit i.e Sony

I had the same with my 8v 1.2 2000 took it to a dealer and put a wire in costing £22 and £45 to fit it.
I have heard it can not be done on later models re 2003/4

Hello

Me too with the same problem: installed a 2005 Blaupunkt CDMP3 unit in my 2002 Punto, only to get this CANCHECK message.

Yes I have found clues that it CAN be done: one has to remove a microchip from the head unit to disable the feature of the radio communicating with the car.

I am sure of this. In my country, many people buy 2nd hand cars from Japan and the UK. Most cars come with their radios locked and in fact by having such a chip removed, enables the unit to work properly.

Blaupunkt have a similar system cause I have been researching this.

Now can anyone proceed on this clue and tell me which microchip to remove?

I hope this post is not considered spam or anything, however I notice a lot of Cancheck problems which can be sorted out !

If you are willing to send your radio in for reprogamming we can disable the cancheck enabling it to be used in any vehicle, including those without the canbus technology

Cancheck removal by SWS Solutions

this fault can be rectified by locating the can bus wires behind the dash pod and joining them together

Tried to avoid Cancheck problem by buying LG CD player, had it fitted by Halfords with Halfords fascia plate. CD player worked ok, but was on even with key out of ignition, swiching of cd cut display but suspect unit still live.
result battery totally drained if car not used for two days - halfords unable to resolve, said punto provide live to unit at all times only fiat supplied cd avoid problem. unit removed money back but now driving in silence while pondering what to do next

The standard fiat stereos are turned on by a message sent over the can bus telling the stereo that the ignition is on, thats why the punto only has a permanent live. The can-check message means the radio is not connected to the bus correctly therefore preventing the draining of the battery with the radio being left on,

+12v is easy to find under the steering column. If you have the reversing sensors fitted by the butchers at fiat dealer, it should be easy to spot.

The halfords thing doesnt suprise me, half of the staff at my local halfords dont even look capable of holding a screwdriver, let along using it or fitting something lol.
