Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

Hi mate,

The headlights shouldn't steam up. As you say, you may not have put the covers back correctly (this would be the first thing to check) I would also check where the plastic lens joins the rear molding of the headlight for any cracks or gaps.

ALSO as yours is an X reg, it may have the original style headlights on it. These did not have the vent holes in the back to prevent misting up. What you are looking for is a u shaped piece of rubber tubing coming out of the rear of the light just behind where the full beam would be. If it does not have these, then this will probably be your problem. You can rectify it by drilling a mall whole near the top of the light just behind the full beam (say MM hole). ((be carefully not to go too far through and drill into the reflectors!))

If they have got lots of condensation inside them, then it may be worth drying them out with a hairdryer before drilling the holes to get rid of what has already formed.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

thanks for info mate, looked at the covers on the back of the head light seem to be on right + yes have the rubber tubes that you said to look for little U shape? would it matter what way they point etc?
are could it be blocked?

i used hair dryer to heat up and get rid of the condensation and went to work and it was back

if it keeps doing it might have to try the drilling side of things!

what a bad design the mk2 head lights are no wonder they changed them!!!

any others to look out for?

thanks for info so far kev

Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

Hi,

The little rubber tubes should pint towards the ground to stop moisture going down into them.

It may be that at somepoint int he past the the covers have not been put on properly and water has pooled in the bottom of the headlight. I had this on mine, and it was only when I took the headlight out that i realised that each headlight had about half a pint of water in it. I drained this out and then dried it out fully with a hairdryer and then put the covers back on propely (the person before me had lost 2 of the clips!) and 4 years later, its not come back once!

Another thing to consider doing, is run some silicone sealent around the top of the headlight where the front clear lense meats the black backing plastic, as this is another common place for leaks as the seal can go.

Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

there is a few screws at the front wheel arch and there is some more if you look at the front bumper when bonnet open remove all of them carefully and pull bumper away.

U could try putting silicone bags in the bag of the headlights to get rid of the problem first. before taking more drastic measures.

Its not uncommon for a leaky light
Im too currently suffering with it
It only happens when i've washed the car and when its raining heavily for a long period

the front bumper has to be removed on MK2's, i am unsure about other models of punto. You will need a star-piece drill bit HOWEVER these often rust up and i would NOT recommend hacking at it. Take it to a garage if you want the front bumper off and cant do it yourself, as it can be very tricky and a pain in the ass!

As for the head lights steaming up. This seems to be a common problem with punto's. I had the same problem with mine on a brand new light and after finding no problems i got fiat to replace it with ANOTHER new one, which i have had no problems with. They are very tempremental. I suggest not buying second hand ones as i dont think that anything can be done with warrenty then. If you have bought a second hand light your best bet is to take the whole light out. Smother it with sealent, hairdryer it to hell, and make sure the rubber tubes are facing down when you put it back in. And if that doesnt work, get a new light as im pretty sure that the law can do you for a badly fogged up lamp.

hope this helped, Alzatar.

Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

Hi I fixed the steaming up headlights on my 2000 Mk2 by switching the headlamp cover seals LH to RH and visa versa ( the seals are a mirror image of each other). I put the seal good side out and have had no snags since.

Re: Fiat Punto mk2 "PROBLEMS"!!

Without meaning to insult anyone…why were fiat even allowed to continue making the punto? I've had nothing but trouble with mine since I bought it 2 years ago.
Wiper linkage replaced
Head gasket repaired
Powersteering is non existant
Headlights are so dim that I can't actually see when I drive in the dark. Also get the steam up issue.
Spontaneously getting the warning light when I break even though both rear clusters have been replaced less than 2 months ago.

It really angers me and to be honest Im looking forward to December when I can scrap the bloody thing and prevent others from suffering the brunt of being a punto mk2 owner.

Blimey what woke this old Thread up?

Careful... just because you got a bad one doesnt mean they are all like that, you didnt own it from new I guess so how do you know what abuse it had before you got it? Some on here love their Mk2 & Mk2b's.

By the way... ALL budget cars have their own little foibles, dont expect perfection from anything old, used or secondhand or you will be truly disappointed...

I think U need to speak to the bloke who sold U the punto. If he sold U an accident car, or a dodgy Punto, that isn't fiat's fault, ( unless it was a fiat dealership ).

Sounds like U bought the car from Arthur Daley
