Hi All
This is my first post and I will try to be as concise as possible. I have a 12/2000 (X reg) Punto 1.2 automatic ELX Speedgear, it's done 33500 miles. Is there anybody who can assist with the confusion as to the possible cause of the loss of the power steering.
I get intermittant power steering failure which began 6 months ago, it only occurs when the car is started up and remains off during driving and has never happened whilst driving. It can remain off for a few days and then comes back on for a week to 10 days and can go on and off a few times in one day, it varies!
I had the battery replaced 6 weeks ago and power steering remained working for a month with no problems, I thought this had cured the problem as this is the longest it has worked without failing. Then it failed and was back to its on/off over the period of a week and now it has been off continuously for 6 days its longest off period ever. Two days into this period the automatic gearbox warning light started to flash and so I took the car to my local garage for a diagnostic check. During the diagnostic check he pressed the city button in and when he tried to switch it off it wouldn't go off despite repeated attempt during the check. The diagnosis came up with an error code which he could not look up further what it meant and recomended that I go to Fiat for a further test. I got into my car to return home and the automatic gearbox warning light had gone out as had the city light!!

I next went to a Fiat dealership, Autoworld in Chesterfield, who did the diagnostic check and this came up with:
Errors detetected by the Control Unit
Present
Motor phases O.C.

Power steering motor O.C., S. C. to Ground or
S.C. to +VB

Also added
Carried out manual check to and from the steering ecu found good feed into ecu and poor feed out advise requires steering ecu.
Part Price 312.62 +VAT
Labour costs 69.99 +VAT.

I am concerned that the replacement of the steering ecu will not cure the problem or indeed that there may be a fixable problem on the steering ecu. How do I enquire further as the garage won't tell me if they checked the wiring and the connectors in or around the steering ecu, they have suggested that I get a second opinion from another garage if I'm not happy with their diagnostic results.
Why did the automatic gearbox warning light come on and then go off after the first diagnostic test?

Do I have some kind of electrical problem that is undiagnosed?
I would appreciate any help and advice that anybody can give me.
Many Thanks:)

THANK YOU...... But not quite what I was hoping to hear having just paid their bill for diagnostics I don't want to go somewhere else and pay the same again and be no further forward.

"Even pay the bit to get a complete column." WHAT DO YOU MEAN"
THE QUOTE FOR PARTS AND LABOUR WAS FOR A NEW STEERING ECU.
