Can I replace 5th gear without taking the gear box out by just removing the end plate on the gear box? As my mine slips out of 5th or could it be a matter of adjusting the cables its w reg mk2

Gears jumping out is usually the selector forks gone Killed in Action. You'll have to drop the box to have a look, I'm afraid. If a lot of little bits are worn, you may find it cheaper to get a whole replacement "Exchange" gearbox.

It has nothing at all to do with the clutch (that would only affect gear-changes) but when the box is off, if the clutch looks anything other than pristine, fit a new one. It'll save you doing the job again soon (depending how worn your clutch is).

I think it may be possible to replace 5th gear and the selecter forks by removing the tin end plate on the gear box.which would then expose the 5th gear assembly. what do you think?it be far quicker then taking the box out.......
