punto gear linkage problem

Hi, im new to the forum ,

im looking for a bit of help for my dads Punto its an 8v on a 53 plate, he phoned me up last night to tell me his car wouldnt go into any gear and that the gear stick was just kind of "wobbling" about.

i think it has to be the gear linkage so my question is ..what is the best/easiest way to get to the gear linkage on a punto and is there anything i should look out for problems etc...

thanks for looking and thanks for any help

Re: punto gear linkage problem

Hi mate, and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

If its a problem with the linkage at the gearbox end, then remove the bttery, and the battery tray (only held on with 3 bolts at the botom) and then look down towards the back of the gearbox and there you will see the linkages. Its likely that one of these may have popped off.
What engine have you got?

Hopw that helps,
Alan

hi thnaks for that, im sure its a 1.2 8valve

it defo sounds like linkage problems because of the gear stick just wobbling around or could it be something else

8v and 16v have same gear box linkages

well i cant imagine both cables pooping off at the same time

so my guess is the bracket holding both of them in place on top of the gearbox has shed it's bolts on the road

or the metal pintle inside the gearbox that moves the selector forks may have broken off

these are both as likely as each other so have a look on top of the box and make sure there's nothing lose and if so it's got to be the little pintle

Re: punto gear linkage problem

Today is boxing day 2013. My mk2b Punto has the same problem. Went Christmas day. Had the car on stands and linkage is connected at both ends of the cable.

I cant see the cable inside but was hoping it had just come off. I have a strange feeling the cable may be OK but just cant understand it. Its the Front and back movement of the gear stick which I believe is the bottom end of the 2 connections on the gear box.

Any help please?
Thanks.

yes
First time i saw this then with an asistant moving the gear stick you could see the linkages moving so assumed it was an internal gearbox problem
unfortunately what it was or fortunately it was indeed the cable, the best way to prove it is to disconnect it from its ball on the top of the gearbox and while you assistant holds the gearstick tight see if you can pull the cable in and out
i bet your sweet bottom dolla you can
the cable you are interested in is the one WITHOUT the black square adjuster on top of it as this is the side to side adjuster rather than the gear selecter one
Easiest solution is a s/h linkage set from a breakers but beware its an unknown quantity that could work till hell freezes over or a week next tuesday, look to be paying 25 to peruse one

Re: punto gear linkage problem

Thanks for such a quick reply earlier s and b. I've taken some photos will upload tomorrow. It appears both cables are attached both ends.

Luckily if anyone else gets stuck like I did you can just select the gears manually by pulling on the block that the lower cable connects to at the gearbox.

Obviously don't do this with the engine running. Start it with the clutch in and if your lucky like me you may get 3rd. Drove the car to a garage and posted the key with a note ready for when they open. As it's Boxing Day evening very little traffic.

Will update soon. Take care all.

you have to tug them hard
be aware new cables arent cheap and your local garage may be loathe to fit second hand
i dont know your finances but i think new cables are 90

Re: punto gear linkage problem

Car all sorted thanks to an amazing local mechanic.

For anyone that has this problem in future for me as user S and B suggested it was the cable. It went ping when going from reverse to first Christmas day morning.

Its the left hand cable that controls the up and down movement. The is on the bottom half of the gearbox. Although I could move the gear stick by pulling on the cable it was confirmed as broken.

My punto is a 188 mk2b 2005 1.2 8v and the cable part number is : 55186856. This part number replaces 55194775. On my car the part numbers were printed on which helped.

My local main dealer had one cost 107.42. Ebay is your best bet as they are half this but I was desperate to get it repaired as I am back to work Monday. Otherwise would have been a few days wait. The fitting cost was 50.

Best Wishes and Happy New Year to All.
Thanks oldhammer thanked for this post

Re: punto gear linkage problem

My 2004 Punto is having problems with gear selection, I cannot get into second without a good pull on the gearstick, first is less tight, but goes in, reverse is really hard too. Have verified the clutch is ok, but have read it's likely corroded at the gearchange end, under the car at the end of the cables.

Going to try WD40 there tomorrow, hoping it might give some temporary assistance, but believe I may have to sand off some corrosion on a pin there.

Anyone else think this a likely cause?Have to drive my two young children 100 miles on Tuesday, so really hoping I can make this trip, then do the job properly on my return.

So hope someone can concur?

Many thanks

Matt

Re: punto gear linkage problem

Hi,

Sorry dont think I can be much help but I would go careful with the gear changes as you dont want a snapped cable like I had.

When mine went Xmas Morning, I jacked the car up and put it on axle stands. Got under the Gear selector and there are 5 screws that are a ribe/torx head Id say a t10 then the plastic cover comes off.

It looked like this on mine.

If you wanted to you could check the condition of your car and use these photos to compare.

While under the car I also noticed this cable runner to have come out. It was a pain to get back in.

Good luck.
