Technical punto gear linkage problem

I broke my gear linkage when my engine fell to the ground (DON'T ASK!). It's basically held with zip ties, which is pretty ****ty because changing from first to second gear at over 6000 RPM, second just doesn't go in

How do you get to the selector? From inside the car, or from below?

Hi,

Sorry dont think I can be much help but I would go careful with the gear changes as you dont want a snapped cable like I had.

When mine went Xmas Morning, I jacked the car up and put it on axle stands. Got under the Gear selector and there are 5 screws that are a ribe/torx head Id say a t10 then the plastic cover comes off.

It looked like this on mine.

If you wanted to you could check the condition of your car and use these photos to compare.

While under the car I also noticed this cable runner to have come out. It was a pain to get back in.

Good luck.

How the gear engagement and selector cables could be detached as shown in the 2 nd figure?

Hi all, had this go on my sister's car. Changed the cable all fine but now its tricky to select 5th. It goes in but seems the cable needs adjusting? I replaced the bottom cable but its the top cable that needs adjusting. Is there a set procedure for making the adjustment or just trial and error.

Just to add I cannot find anything online or in the Haynes manual for how to make the adjustments.
Image with the arrow is that the adjuster?

Hi mate,

I have replied in the other thread re disconnecting the selector and cleaning it up.

As I say though that will only help if the gear stick is stiff from left to right.

Alan
Hi Alan I have the stiff going up and down gear change. I can't work out how to get to the pivot rod to clean it. I have a Punto mk2b active sport 1.2 8v.
Can you help?

what are you asking here?

The gear knob you move with your hand is connected to the gearbox by two cables. You can see these two cables moving under the battery. These cables rust as they are near the wheel arch. They need some oil where the rod comes out of the cable

It was from a post way back when. I am aware of the mechanism for the remote cables.
Some people (like me) had been through greasing the cable rods attached to the cup and Ball joint with no difference in stiffness.
One comment (from Alan) suggested it was a fairly common problem where the pivot rod from the plate which the cable end cup attaches into the gearbox becomes corroded and tightens up where it passes through two plastic bushes
The idea was to pull out this rod and emery it to remove the corrosion.
To remove the rod you had to remove a nut on the opposite end of it from the ball/cup.
There was a photo how but looking again today I think it was for a JTD model Punto.
My problem turned out to be a very rusty cable which I have now replaced.
