I have a W plate punto that has just started overheating. I bled the radiator and topped the system up with water/coolant. This worked fine for a day or two then the problem re-occured. I decided to book it into a garage to see if they could see the problem, I thought it was the thermostat sticking on closed but they have come back saying the head gasket has blown. To my knowledge if the head gasket blows I would have water in the oil causing a milky soloution. But there is no sign of this, are the garage conning me into replacing the head gasket when actually it is only a simple fault.

p.s the heater will not blow hot even when car is heated up, also car has only done 23,000 miles

the way the headgasget goes on these you very rarly if not "never" get the sludge you speek off, ive done over 100 of these i know.
the simptoms you described also makes me think its the headgasget gone.

thanks mate what sort of bill should i be looking at quote of £200 for new headgasket new timing belt and all labour included. Does that sound ok

mayonnaise oil is a very old fashioned way of diagnosing headgasgets, in 5 years the only time ive ever seen this is on a mk1 ducato petrol.

Im having the same problem on my punto 1.2 1998. Getting it tested right now. Ive been told it most probs water pump and gasket. Already got timing belt done about 3 weeks ago. should have got the water pump at the same time really.

Is it important to get the heads skimmed ?

Exactly the same symptoms as mine, no heater! When I checked my oil levels, the oil was normal colour, though. Apparently headgaskets are £400 from Fiat, but feel free to look at my thread see if any of the symptoms I had match your car. (https://www.fiatforum.com/punto/224006-violent-juddering.html)
Mine is a 2000 X reg and has done 28,000 but this time last year it was on 22,000! :)
